Unperturbed with my questions like “Why does the popcorn pop?” or “Why is the sky blue when space is black?” my parents endeavored to provide me with the mindset and resources to go beyond the superficial, searching for answers on my own. I was given incredible freedom to learn and to experiment; my dad often letting me loose on his desktop causing the poor machine to crash, unable to bear my adventures. As I carefully observed him open the machine to undo some of my doings, I was dumbfounded by the intricate view inside. How could such delicate fragments of hardware and complex software work together and yet be so easy to operate? Answers to my probing questions, slowly unraveled how each “part” added up to the “whole”, thereby seeding the concept of “simplicity through complexity” in my mind; my first engineering idea.
As I have grown, computing and this idea has slowly become my world. Therefore, be it my work experience of creating a leave management system for school employees, making a mobile application for easy tracking of homework by students or participating in Google Cod...
In the beginning, Brooks illustrates the shift in thought from the outdated ideals of the past to the modern paradigm of simplicity. The oxymoronic title, “The Evolution of Simplicity,” exemplifies the irony of a society that advances forward technologically, yet moves backwards toward simplicity. This demonstrates our “go for the gusto” mentality that causes us to forget to enjoy the little things in life. Too often, we restrict ourselves with tunnel vision, focusing only on the destination ahead and forgetting to enjoy the
After a deep depression, I felt totally devastated and without any confidence in myself. However, thanks to the support of my parents, I decided to try again. Very reluctantly, I began studies in computer science at the Universidad de Nariño. Step by step, I found interest in the subjects and courses and, especially, in its application in the real world. However, were two key aspects during my career those changed my conception: my liking for the Open Source Software (OSS) and my admission to a research group.

Princeton is an excellent university that provides good opportunities and education for hard working students to pursue their dreams. Princeton University is located in New Jersey with 30,000 residents in a safe and pleasant neighborhood (Princeton University - About Princeton; Princeton University - Facts & Figures; Princeton University). There are shops, eco-friendly streets, restaurants, and nice parks surrounding the campus. There is a shuttle train, the “Dinky,” can transport students directly from the campus to Princeton Junction Station where students can travel to New York and Philadelphia within an hour each. These places can be extremely useful to students wanting to discover countless resources of arts around them.
Working as an educator and in various consulting roles over the past seventeen years, I have had the opportunity to experience how technology is disrupting so many spaces, ranging from politics to toothpaste. I have enjoyed working with and discovering how teams of people develop technological solutions on the back end, onboard and engage users on the front end, improve their products through feedback, and take calculated risks to drive their companies and/or products forward. Most recently, I am proud of the work I am doing on two
Ever since I was a child, I have had a great interest for the automotive industry. From car trivia to novel innovations, my innate passion for the automotive industry has always made me research the minutest detail of every vehicle that interested me. Since elementary school I would draw sketches of cars which incorporated technology which were unheard of at that time; novel devices such as electrochromic windshields, HUD displays, and wind turbines which would constantly re-generate electricity for the car. While growing up, my hobbies largely consisted of constructing countless Lego and Meccano sets, and repairing my mom’s 19 year-old car. In middle school, math and science were my favorite subjects: applying science and mathematics to solve real-world problems has fascinated me and I have also taken further steps to reach my goals. By the age of thirteen I devised a scaled model of a heliostat power plant, which successfully powered a light bulb. The mathematics beyond the focus points of parabolic dishes and thermodynamics was very advanced for my age, but I took up the challenge...
Thesis statement: With the power of computers at our hand, our society has made several improvements in different aspects of our everyday life which can range from education, all the way up to the government itself.
My undergraduate preparation at the Computer Science of my University has given me a very substantial knowledge of the basic areas of Computer Science. Any amount of learning in Computer Science would be incomplete without hands on experience of Programming. In a world where...
The fist computer, known as the abacus, was made of wood and parallel wires on which beads were strung. Arithmetic operations were performed when the beads were moved along the wire according to “programming” rules that had to be memorized by the user (Soma, 14). The second earliest computer, invented by Blaise Pascal in 1694, was a “digital calculating machine.” Pascal designed this first known digital computer to help his father, who was a tax collector. Pascal’s computer could only add numbers, and they had to be entered by turning dials (Soma, 32). It required a manual process like its ancestor, the abacus. Automation was introduced in the early 1800’s by a mathematics professor named Charles Babbage. He created an automatic calculation machine that was steam powered and stored up to 1000 50-digit numbers. Unlike its two earliest ancestors, Babbage’s invention was able to perform various operations. It relied on cards with holes punched in them, which are called “punch cards.” These cards carried out the programming and storing operations for the machine. Unluckily, Babbage’s creation flopped due to the lack of mechanical precision and the lack of demand for the product (Soma, 46). The machine could not operate efficiently because technology was t adequate to make the machine operate efficiently Computer interest dwindled for many years, and it wasn’t until the mid-1800’s that people became interested in them once again.
I remember as a kid sitting on the lap of my father, while I was holding the wheel and he was controlling the gas pedal. I asked him questions like “How does a car start?” He would answer in simple words by saying, “This car starts when we put the ignition key; the power from the battery reaches the small gears (starter motor) and the big gear (the flywheel) will meet, causing the fly wheel to start rotating: then the car starts. “How come when we step on the gas pedal the car starts moving?” “This actually happens by the clutch of the car, which is used to smoothly transfer power from the engine to the wheels. And if it is pressed forcefully, the gas pedal causes friction with the ground, making a noise. So that is why it should be stepped on gradually.” These trips not only made me learn about technology more, it made me develop a relationship with my father. This was a big triumph for me and I continued to go there. In my freshman and sophomore year I volunteered at this place. When I was volunteering my father would give me projects to repair one of the cars with him and together we would do so. Through my time at EPEI, I realized that knowing one particular subject is not enough. I favored
My interest in Computers dates back to early days of my high school. The field of CS has always fascinated me. The reason for choosing CS stream was not a hasty decision. My interest started developing in the early stage of my life, when I studied about the invention of computers. The transformation from the large size to small palmtops enticed me to know about the factors responsible for making computers, also the electronic gadgets so small. I was quite impressed after seeing a small chip for the first time in my school days, especially after I learnt that it contained more than 1000 transistors, “integrated circuits”.
Long ago, people were simple and didn’t have many technologies. They used to take so much time in planning their projects, researching, and saving and recording their studying. Look around, this world changed a lot. There are cars, airplanes, computers, and many other technologies. Technology can be found everywhere, and we use depend on it a lot. One of the most important technologies is computers and laptops. Many people use them today in their daily lives and it eases many things for them.

Did your phone just ring? Or was that your computer notifying you of a new email? Since the Digital Revolution and the addition of digital electronics like the personal computer, software-based technology has always been an essential aspect of our lives. Something that would have taken up an entire classroom can now fit within the grasp of your hands thanks to the efforts of various computer scientists and engineers, making our lives much easier.
When you look around, you see all kinds of modern wonders. None of these items would be possible without engineering. Engineering has shaped the lives of humans for thousands of years; it is simply the application of science and math to invent or innovate an item to carry out a human need. Recently, computer engineering has been the basis of the human world. We rely on computers like it is water or air, and it’s come to the point where they could be a necessity for success. Computers are used for pictures, data, development, research, design and much more. The mere fact that humanity prospered for so long without advanced computers is astonishing.
