What is the best way to relieve stress while still being able to knock things over? One fun and socially acceptable way is through bowling. Most people just go to the bowling alley for parties or social gatherings, but never try to improve their game. It can be demoralizing to be the one who constantly throws gutter balls. Why not make the experience more enjoyable by being a better and more knowledgeable bowler? Learning the history of bowling and applying fundamental techniques will help make a mediocre score turn into a result in which one can be proud. Also, backing that up with the right equipment and practice can really complete the package. Simple things like the right shoes, the ball having the correct weight, finger grip, and outside grip can start the game off the right way. To begin, one must first understand the history of bowling to discover why bowling operates the way it does today. In Bowling Alone Robert D. Putnam, writes about the decline of social capital and some reason for why it is happening. Putnam finds that there is a decline in social interactions all across the board from work place, religion, and even family. Putnam believes that the reason for the decline is that “Gen X’ers” are into themselves. Consequently, with that mind set the chances that one would be depressed, commit a crime, or commit suicide would be much higher. However, Putnam also suggested that we could increase social capital and bring it back to the post WW2 numbers.
The curveball was based on a spinning clamshell that curved across the water on a Brooklyn Beach (Fleitz, D). A curveball may not be the easiest thing to learn, but after you learn it you will never forget how to throw it. First you need to get a grip on the ball and rest your pinkie and ring finger beside the ball, this is for support and the spin. Plan on releasing the ball aiming at the catchers mask (Kendrick, S). Secondly you should wind up the same as if you were throwing a fastball. Your palm should be facing first base as the ball goes over your head. Keep your wrist cocked and rotated toward your body. Finally you want to keep your elbow up and turn your wrist, then snap your wrist down as you release the ball. The learning process will be a lot easier and quicker if you have a good coach that can help you if you can't get a motion down.
Bowling and Golf both share unique aspects of their individual sport. Bowling is considered an anaerobic activity, while golf is an aerobic activity. In bowling, one usually does not get sweaty or become suddenly out of breath, however, in golf, since one is consistently walking to retrieve their ball to where they the ball landed, both sports have their own purposes of exercising. In addition, in a Chicago Tribune article, Bowling may be a sport, but is it work?, by Marla Krause, interviewed the head coach of a boys' bowling team at New Trier High School in Winnetka, he says,” As exercise, it may not be like running or swimming," Durkin said, "but it takes some leg and upper-body strength to throw hard and hook the ball.” As this course taught

Civic engagement comes in many forms and is highly influential in making a difference in our communities. In Bowling Alone, Robert D. Putnam explains how the tides of civic engagement have turned in the last third of the century. Putnam segments civic engagement into the realms of political participation, voluntary associations, religious participation, and work-based groups. The common theme amongst all these realms is the general decline in participation. Putnam describes other noteworthy trends such as the influence of generational changes, the role of technology, and the relationship between individual versus group activities. The trends outlined in each realm is significant
There I was walking to see who made the softball team. I could feel the butterflies in my stomach, worried that I would not make the team. As I looked at the names nervously, I could feel goosebumps appearing on my arms. To my surprise my name was on the list and I could not have been happier.
Baseball was founded in the 18th century and was derived from the European game of cricket. By the time the American Revolution began, contrasting variations of baseball were played nationwide. In September 1845, a group of men founded the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club. One of these members, Alexander Joy Cartwright, is responsible for creating the modern-day rules of baseball. The Knickerbockers started the first official game of baseball in 1846 against a team of cricket players. On the other hand, softball was first developed on Thanksgiving Day 1887, while several men were awaiting the outcome of the Yale vs. Harvard football game in a Chicago boat club. When Yale was announced as the winner, a Yale alumni member playfully threw
For the past eight years of my life I have been playing softball. It all started when I was eight years old and my dad took me to my first softball practice. I was thrilled to be playing a sport. My dad grew up playing baseball and his sisters played softball so he was ecstatic when I was finally old enough to play. I loved softball for the first 4 years of playing when it was all fun and games. In middle school softball became harder and more competitive and I slowly started to lose interest in it. I thought high school softball would be different; I would love my teammates, make varsity, and all along have a great first season of highschool softball… I was wrong.
I relieve stress in different ways while playing football and golf. In football, I am able to take out any anger or frustration by hitting someone really hard. Competitive and aggressive, football is a very exciting sport (BE1). After the
Sports are a great way to bring people together and encourage friendly competition among people from all walks of life. In general, a sport is usually some form of physical game or activity performed by two or more people. One such example would be golf, often dubbed the "rich man 's sport" throughout its history. Golf has undergone many changes since its creation in the early 15th century, but has remained one of the more expensive sports as far as equipment costs go. When discussing the impact that different technological advancements in the materials used in golf have had, I 'm mainly looking at how these adjustments have improved performance.
What is so hard about golf? Some people think golf is just hitting a ball to hole. But little do they know it is a lot more complicated than that. The golfer needs to know how hit the ball with the right amount of power loft and the appropriate club.
Hearing the loud “thump” as the ball hits the racket is extremely satisfying, especially if your life now revolves around this fast-paced and exhilarating sport. Tennis is an outdoor game played by two individuals or pairs of players on a clay or grass court that’s divided by a low net. Each game is played with tennis rackets and small, yellow elastic balls. Tennis was first introduced in Wales and the United Kingdom in 1873 by “Major Walter Wingfield” (tennistheme.com). While most sports are easy to pick up, tennis takes extreme dedication to learn how to play the game, to perfect the amount of technique it takes, as well as its great impact on one’s personal life.
Many life lessons can be taught through sports. Children can learn the importance of work ethic, working with others, perseverance, and the list goes on. There are studies that have shown that kids who are involved in athletics are more successful in the business world. It is only when parents turn the sporting events into an ultra-competitive requirement for their child that it can become detrimental. The lessons that sports teach kids about real life is one of the greatest benefits that can be gained from sports. Because so much can be learned through sports we need to make sure that we put focus on teaching lessons through sports rather than making it all about winning. It is a sad when parents turn a great beneficial thing into something that can be harmful for their children.
Throughout my early childhood, I went through several different phases. I practiced an abundance of different activities such as: dance, baseball, tumbling, gymnastics, and even baton. However, none of these sports or hobbies stuck. That is, until I discovered volleyball. Never have I felt the love for something as much as I did this sport. Volleyball has had an unimaginable impact on my life in so many ways. I would not be the person I am today if not for this sport.
