Afflicting the Pupils Since the time we are born until the moment we die we are taught to follow a specific routine in our lives without questioning the why or the consequences our actions bring. During that course humans tend to become so familiar with our routines that when an unexplained incident occurs, we panic because it is something we’ve never been exposed to, an example to this are the killings of innocent people whom we care for in environments where security and education are supposed to be the priority. In our eyes campuses are supposed to be protected by those who wear uniforms and are trained professionals that are ready to deal with such situations, so why allow a law that will grant any civilian the right to carry guns on campus, …show more content…
David, Skorton “is a professor of medicine” and formerly served as the person in charge of the University of Iowa (628). Him together with Glenn Altschuler, present their ideas against guns on campus in the essay titled “Do We Really Need More Guns on Campus?” Here David, Skorton and Glenn Altschuler declare that “The campus homicide rate is about one death per one million people, compared to fifty-seven deaths per million in the general population” (629).
On the essay, David, Skorton and Glenn Altschuler also point out how uneasy police officers feel at the idea of having students with guns on campus, because in the case of a tragedy happening there is no distinction between the innocent students is and the delinquent. A “former provost of Idaho State University” stated her concern about the insecurities towards this new law insisting that “When you’re responding to a situation like that, and someone’s in plain clothes with a gun, who’s the bad guy? Who are you going to take out to save the lives of…other students you are trying to protect?”
In “Stop Worrying About Guns in the Classroom. They’re Already here.” the author, Erik Gilbert, argues in favor of the law allowing the concealed carry of firearms in college campuses. Gilbert claims that it’s futile to be “worried by the prospect of having guns in [the] classroom” because he believes that even before the bill was passed, some students and faculty were already carrying firearms to campus (Gilbert). Furthermore, he insinuates that despite the presence of firearms, there were no incidents of student or faculty causing harm. To support his argument, the author provides incidents which have occurred over the last decade at his campus, such as accidental discharge of guns in dorms, firearms in student’s vehicles, and one faculty member who was discovered to be in possession of a gun in an on-campus facility. Considering these incidents and previous knowledge of “prevailing regional attitudes towards guns”, the author assumes that significant numbers of students, and possibly faculty, bring guns on campus regularly (Gilbert). As for those who are afraid due to the new law, he declares to them that firearm permit-holders are not dangerous by comparing the rate of their crimes to that of police officers. He also reasons that permit holders need to be at least 21 to qualify—claiming that the more mature students qualify—and have background checks performed.
When the professor Greg Hampikian decided to write “When may I shoot a student” He was trying express his own opinion to the Idaho State Legislature about the bill that allows for guns to be on the college campus of Boise State University. Greg tells us why he thinks this bill is really not needed by saying “I think we can all agree that guns don’t kill people, people with guns do.” He goes on to make many different examples of how the bill might be misunderstood and why it would be pointless to add the bill that will allow people to have a gun on campus. Greg is wanting to know why the Idaho State Legislature would create a problem when there is not a problem in the first place. Greg goes on being ironic when he is pointing out that the only crime on the campus is when students cheat on a test or experiment with drugs, he even go as far to say that the campus has a murder rate of zero.
There is a saying that says, “Why fix something that isn’t broke?” In other words, if something is doing good the way it is already then don’t change it. The same applies with concealed gun carry on college campuses. If college campuses have been statistically proven to be one of the safest public places, then why try to fix them by bringing concealed guns into campuses. I believe that there should not be concealed handguns allowed in college campuses because it will make students more unsafe, would make the learning environment in class a very unhealthy experience, and cause trouble for the campus police to spot a real shooter.
While the opposing team fears that this law may bring more deaths, and will not solve any issues but create new ones, it will also make campuses an unsafe place for students and faculty. The majority of the students who attend universities or in general do not have a license to carry a weapon, but that still does not stop how unsafe people feel in classrooms, or in their dorms. In my opinion, I am someone who opposes the campus carry law. I believe that weapons bring nothing but danger and fear, and many other students and professors feel the same way.
The sweat was dripping down my face as I pushed the weights off my chest. Everyone ran towards their bags after a student said there was a gun in school. Twitter was the first source that we checked just to make sure. Boom! The door slammed open as coach Ben yells “Hurry up and get out”. My heart started beating faster and faster. We didn’t know what was going on. As we were running to the gym everyone was panicking and pushing each other. I could feel the burn on my elbow but I didn’t know what it was. When we got to the gym my elbow was covered in blood. We were told to get down and stay quiet. Later on we were told a student brought a gun to school and was planning on committing suicide. That was one of many gun incidents at my high school.

Concealed weapons in college campus’s have been a big issue since the mass shootings in Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois Universities. Allowing for guns to be allowed in college campus’s would be a bad thing to do since it would create additional risks for students, even if weapons were allowed it wouldn’t deter the shooter, and it would detract from a healthy learning environment. So far there is only five states , Colorado, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin, that allow “concealed carry” at school campus.

When someone has a license to carry a concealed firearm, it does not mean that they should be able to carry wherever they would like. No one person is responsible enough for that privilege. In a high stress situation of an active shooter scene, even a highly trained person can make a bad assessment of the situation. Someone that just bought their first firearm or just got their license to carry, can make the situation worse. Firearms should not be allowed on any school campus because they are dangerous, can lead to more gun violence, and more innocent deaths due to inexperience.
