Friend or Foe
The friends a person has can help mold that person into who they are today. This is why picking friends and keeping friends can sometimes be a difficult task. Some friends could be wonderful, life-long friends and some friends could be wolves in sheep’s clothing. Whether the friends I have picked over the years have impacted my life in a good way or a bad way, they have still shaped me into the person I am today.
One thing about me is that I try to not let what others think of me affect how I see myself at least if it’s negative. I try to stay optimistic and look at the brighter side of things. I try to look at myself in a good light. However, in the past I let just one person’s opinions of me dictate how I saw myself.
When I was in middle school, I had a friend who’s opinions always influenced how I saw myself. This friend would put me down a lot and make me feel bad about myself. Looking back we did have some good times, but sometimes she didn’t even seem like a friend at all. Sometimes this girl looked to me more like a villain than she did a friend. My other friends tried to tell me that she wasn’t a good friend but even considering the circumstances I didn’t believe them. It turns out, they were right about her all along. She was constantly telling me that I was doing something wrong, or that I couldn’t do something, and she acted like I was never good enough in general. She would make snide comments about my hair, or the way I dressed, and she made it her job to belittle me. So, I changed the way I dressed, the way I acted, and I wore makeup to be just like her. For some reason, I thought it would better to be like her than it would be to be myself. This girl put it in my head that no one woul...

...letely different person around them, I’m still myself, I just act differently around different people.
So, I try to make sure I choose my friends wisely from now on. Not being able to be myself is one of the worst feelings I can have. I choose not to hide who I am anymore. I wear what I want to wear, I act how I want to act, and I don’t let other people negatively influence my life. If I feel like someone isn’t good for me chances are, I’m not going to be their friend. I’m not going to be rude to them by any means, but I will not let other people make me feel bad about myself. I keep people who don’t put me down for being myself, but rather accept me as I am in my life. I suggest all people try to do this. If others could learn to be accepting of all types of people and to accept themselves for who they truly are, the world could be a much better, peaceful place.
