“Who is Jesus Christ to you?” When first presented with this particular writing prompt, I quickly dismissed it as being “easy” to write. However, as I brainstormed the meaning of this question, I realized that writing this essay would be more difficult than I originally thought. I wondered how I could possibly illustrate the extent of who Jesus Christ is to me in a single personal essay. I then realized that as hard as I try to put everything Jesus Christ is to me into words, I would never be able to properly accomplish this task. While I feel like my essay could never do justice to the relationship I have with Jesus Christ, I found three ways to describe who he is to me and how he and his story control my life. Luke 2:11 (NIV) states, “Today in the town of David a Savior had been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” This verse relates to my first point in describing who Jesus Christ is to me; He is my Savior. This certain verse points to my second factor of who Jesus Christ is to me; He is my hero. Sometimes I become overwhelmed when I ponder the magnitude of how the Savior of the world died an excruciating death to save me from my sins and guarantee me a place in heaven one day. I find it amazing that a king who should be seated on a throne in Heaven came down to earth and suffered persecution and crucifixion because He loves me that much! How do you see him? You might have gotten some of your ideas about Jesus from childhood Sunday school stories, or from one of the plethora of “Jesus” films.
We observed a series of skits that exhibited the attributes of Jesus. During the final skit, while we were sitting inside the K-Life gym, a black curtain dropped and we saw three men hanging from crosses. The men looked as if they had taken baths in blood, and they were struggling to speak and breathe; the man on the middle cross portrayed Jesus. The skit continued to act out the entirety of the crucifixion and the presence of the Holy Spirit was prominent in the room. I was astonished when I realized that He suffered and died on the cross for a person as broken and sinful as me. After the skit was over, Joe slowly walked out to speak to everyone who had just watched the simulated crucifixion. He revealed to us how undeserving we are of God’s grace, and how Jesus died for every person that has ever lived. He continued on with his disquisition and we eventually began to worship. At this point in time I had begun to pray to Jesus, that he would take over my life and use me in a way that glorifies him. I did not know what this would look like, but I desired to be a living example of a man of God.
Jesus is a person who I’m able to talk whenever I need someone to listen to me. He’s someone who is always listening whether you have something excellent or awful to say. After I have a rough day or get into an argument with someone, I take a moment and talk to Jesus. I feel like this is a great way to release my stress or angry and feel better afterwards because I know someone was listening. Lately I have struggled to attend church, however, I know that Jesus is still with me. Jesus will always be with me no matter the circumstances.
It wasn’t till I engaged myself at a Christian college, that I have now received a new and more accurate picture of Christ. His book, The Jesus I Never Knew, questions the reader with the thought, “How many Christians today are in the same position, not fully understanding Christ’s mission and purpose?” Yancey divides the novel into three main sections: “Who He Was,” “Why He Came,” and “What He Left Behind.” The section that I connected with was “Why He Came.”

Before this semester I had never taken a moment to ask myself - Who is Jesus? It is something that I have never been given the option to question. Being brought up in a strong Christian background, where I went to mass every Sunday, and then following mass, went to bible school for two hours, ingrained a specific image of Jesus into my head. This image portrayed Jesus as a white man who preformed miracles for the poor and oppressed, and also sacrificed himself on the cross for all of humanity’s’ sins. However, after taking this course, I have been able to rethink Jesus in ways that I could have never imagined. It has become evident to me that there are many different ways to see Jesus. And with each of these contrasting views, there comes both biblical and rational evidence supporting each image along with criticism disputing each image.
One phrase summarizes the horror of hell. “ God isn’t there.” What if God weren’t here on earth? What if he never came to set us free? If you think that people are cruel now, imagine what it would be like without the presence of God. You think we are brutal to each other now, imagine the world without the Holy Spirit. You think there is loneliness and despair and guilt now, imagine life without the touch of Jesus. No forgiveness. No hope. No acts of kindness. No words of love or encouragement. No more food given in his name. No more songs sung to his praise. No more deeds done in his honor. If God took away his angels, his grace, his promise of eternity, and his servants, what would the world be like?
