White privilege is a form of embedded racism wherein “white” people are granted greater power, prestige, and/or access to resources (cite this from textbook). The story of Jennifer Camblett is about a white lesbian woman who wanted to undergo artificial insemination, but it resulted in a huge problem because the sperm bank sent the wrong specimen. She found out well into her pregnancy but went through with it anyways. After 2 years the baby girl was born, she is deciding to sue the sperm bank even after they gave her a refund because the baby was black. White privilege serves several advantages that go unnoticed. These advantages include providing white people with “perks” that other people of color do not experience. Some of these perks include: having greater power or prestige. These advantages in turn are privileges that white people have. For example, in the article Mystal states “YES. Sometimes, black parents have to make a whole different set of life choices just to avoid raising their kids in all-white communities” (Mystal 2014). This shows that white people consider themselves to be a higher ranking compared to black people making them indirectly judge black people. This results in black people changing the way they live in order to avoid such problems. This shows that white privilege does exist because the black person had to make the change not the white. People seem to believe that white privilege is birthright and unnoticed but the article states that “Cramblett knows, just as well as I do, that her baby will be treated differently than a white baby. She just didn’t think she’d ever have to deal with it” (Mystal 2014). This goes to show that white privilege does exist and they indirectly consider it birthright because they expect not to go through things that non-white people would go through. She is indirectly fighting for her privilege back because she does not want to go through what other people of color usually go through.
