Career Prospectus Research Essay I love art and design. I plan to go to Baker to get a degree for Graphic Design. I’ve learned through research and my internship, that Graphic Design is what I want to do and what I enjoy doing. I love being able to be artistic and creative. Through research, I've learned what I want to do and my plan for how to get there.
Who I Am?
Graphic Design is my passion. Freshman year, I got an art award which inspired me to keep taking art classes and made me focus on careers that include art. Then I got my internship at Allied Media and learned that I truly love Graphic Design. Through this internship I have learned many important values needed to be a Graphic Designer, many of which I already had. As David Frost said, “Don't aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally”, proving that as long as you love doing it, even if it doesn't make as much as other careers, it will pay off. Doing my internship has given me the experience needed to know what it’s like to be a Graphic Designer and their work routine such as schedule and work pattern, and I know they don’t make much money, but as long as you love doing it, it will pay off. I am willing to go wherever my career will take me as long as I love doing it, I can be happy anywhere. I have always loved art and design and love creativity. I’ve taken art since elementary, and have always loved anything that let me be creative. My internship has motivated me towards Graphic Design, teaching me the values I need, showing me I love it and am good at it.

...tudents. The Graphic Design program at Baker is called Digital Media Design and is available in Associates and Bachelors. There Bachelors degree may take a little over 4 years because they use trimesters instead of semesters. You need a minimum GPA of 2.0 to graduate. For a Bachelor's degree it would cost $10,800 for tuition and $1,500 for books. I would live at home to save money and also take most of my classes online so I can work at my own pace and save money on gas.
Graphic Design may not be the best paying job compared to others, but since I love doing it, it will pay off in the end. Through researching this career, I have found that I am prepared to get a good start and getting a job in this career. I have a year worth of experience from my internship and I will get more in college, giving me a great head start. Graphic Design is a great choice for me.
Many of my friends pick their careers based on money and trade skills that they have. I am proficient in art and design, but didn’t feel like that was what I wanted to do for my career. Your career shapes a huge portion of your life. It is what you do every day, for a large portion of your life. It is what I have prepared for the past 12 or so years of my life. It is way more than just money or a skill. I wanted to do something unique, something interesting, something that would inspire me to be a better human, something that would make me feel, something that is challenging, something that helped others, and above all, something that was rewarding and made me feel fulfilled.
The famous joke,”How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” could also apply to becoming a renowned graphic designer. The key is practice, practice, practice. A few months ago, I emailed Don Howard, a former Disney Imagineer and owner of Don Howard Studios in Huntsville, Alabama. I wrote to Mr. Howard seeking advice on the steps I needed to take to have a successful career. His advice was simple, obtain your degree and draw something everyday.
Before finally deciding on my career path, I had a very hard time trying to choose which path I wanted to take. After considering what I truly enjoy doing and what skills I possess, I have decided that I wanted to become a graphic designer. I want to be a graphic designer, because I feel that I would have a chance to use all of the skills I possess and be happy while doing it. In order to become a graphic designer, there are certain educational requirements that must be met. There are also specific job requirements that I must accomplish. Although there are many requirements, the personal benefits I gain will make up for all of the hard work in the end.
In today’s society, college students are often told that we need to focus on pursuing careers that offer financial security rather than pursuing a career the we love. In the graphic novel “Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need”, author Daniel Pink challenges this idea. Rather than trying to pursue a career because it makes money, the author uses characters such as Johnny’s coach, Dianne to tell us otherwise, providing six elements that will ensure you great success.
This last thought led me to seriously think about which area of design I should be researching for, and unless an opportunity arises for a graphic illustrator position soon after graduation, I foresee me doing freelance work. With this in mind I started looking into what being a freelancer entails, which led me to an article titled, ‘So, You Want a Creative Job?’ (Karjaluoto, 2012)
Recently students have had a lot to think about when it comes to our future and what we need to do to get our career and future on track. So to get some insight and some very useful help I met with Gayle Tucker of Fast Signs here in Sioux Falls. Gayle studied graphic design at South Dakota State University where she found her passion for design. I asked Gayle why she chose to pursue this field. She started out wanting to be a fashion designer but learned how little she could do with it here in South Dakota. This is when she found graphic design where she could pursue her love of design and still hold a solid career. She also found it to be more fulfilling to be creative, where everything else seemed to lack or feel mundane.
We have all had that fateful question thrust upon us at some point in our life- “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Few realize the true magnitude of that question at such an early age. Truly, the reason for that is due to the fact that no one, at this point in life, interprets the question for what it truly means. “What do you want to learn in college? What path will you choose? What do you want to become and spend forty years, more or less, doing with your life?” Needless to say, it is anything but a minor decision. Picking a career is one of the most important choices an individual can make in life. It is extremely difficult to find a profession that provides a substantial source of income and satisfaction at the same time. Thus, my answer to that age-old question has been up for debate in my mind for a long time. Although the debate is ongoing, I have narrowed the field of choices somewhat. The careers that I am interested in are three very contrasting careers: A physical/occupational therapist, a multimedia artist/animator, and a college theology professor.
Well, perhaps what I'm asking is that you do a little soul-searching. Ask yourself if you really want a degree in art and to make it a career. Please consider all this and think on
I believe that to a certain caliber, the best career for me is an architect. Due to many specific reasons. When I was around the age six, I had a particular interest in houses and homes, especially those that include residential and commercial. I would try to build little forts out of wood and cardboard in ditches or in forests and as I got older, I tried harder to make more unique designs and structures out of more than just wood. Eventually I tried using bricks and cement. I would make cool and sometimes funky designs that even my parents found interesting. After numerous compliments and awes of fascination, I found what was meant for my particular skills. The world of artisism and architecture. The many elements that come
Admission to Ryerson School of Interior Design has been a vision for me since before high school. Capturing what you are passionate about in life and what fulfills you both personally and professionally has always been my goal. Throughout my young life, I have been fascinated by visual stimulus, from architectural structures, museums, home décor shows/blogs/magazines/stores, I knew that I wanted to contribute to this industry. In planning the next step from high school, I applied to Universities that seemed to fit what I was supposed to do, and an amazing opportunity came my way to live in Paris for a year, go to school and work as an International model. Now, I am ready to execute the next step and follow what I know I want and what I will
Thinking and discussing about our future and career path is a common topic that often occurs in any school-like setting, but can still be considered taboo to anyone who does not know what they would like to do with their lives, such as myself. The future is still quite broad and unknown, yet I am excited to discover what I will make myself capable of doing in order to thrive and enjoy my future. Although I do have an idea of what I would like to pursue, which is art, my results on the major and career assessment help in further convincing me that the art-field is meant to be the field most suitable for me although it does depict some exceptions.
Educational Goals: Education is extremely important part of my past, present, and future goals. I currently hold an Associate of Applied Science in Graphic Design Media. I have found that an A.A.S Degree does not go as far al I originally intended in the Rochester, MN area and furthering my education will be a necessity for my future career goals. Over the past 2 years I have been working on my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the Minnesota School of Business Rochester campus. I am currently a senior with 3 quarters left before a spring graduation. After a June graduation, I plan on taking a summer quarter break. After summer break I will either continue on at MSB for my Masters in Business Administration with a Minor in Marketing or transferring the University of Minnesota for my Masters in Adult Education. After my Masters Degree is complete I will decide at that time if I wish to continue on and achieve my Ph.D.
During my whole life and experience I have been interested in the Art, Creativity, and I have been traveling around Graphics Designing. When I go out to centres, supermarkets, the high streets around Kingston anywhere in London, Germany and other parts of Europe which I have seen. I have seen lots of Graphics designs in advertising, Billboards companies for example in electronical products or any type of product the graphics advertising companies running around the world, just because of that I was inspired in the graphics designing and I was influence by the subject.
In summary, throughout my life many career choices have crossed my mind. I have tried being a stay-at-home mom and a hospital employee. I am working on trying computers. The path I chose in computers is yet to be decided but the opportunities are vast. My current path leaves me many opportunities in healthcare and computers but the possibilities do not stop there. With further education I could still do anything.
Designing in any way is a career that I could say becomes natural to me because it all involves some experience in art and art is the basic beginning of it all.
