When World’s Collide Reflection Paper
To begin, before viewing this film and taking this course, I possessed a very broad sense of the tragedy of the conquered indigenous natives in both the Latin America’s and the USA. I have always despised the ethnocentric depictions of history throughout movies, images, textbooks, as well as other media and musical influences. This film truly helped expand my knowledge and put what we have read so far into perspective. Before this film, one concept that was unknown to me was the fact that corn, or Teocicle, was an import and not native to either Europe or Spain.
Furthermore, while I did know of Isabella’s commitment to Catholicism, I did not know of her contradictions between religion and monetary concerns, i.e. gold. ...,000 ft. African slaves led constant revolts however, laws prohibited indigenous natives from becoming hostages thus, his moral code, god or gold, came into question. All indigenous men forced to take rotations in working in the mines.
Finally, Garcilaso de la Vegawas a Spanish soldier and poet’s words are part of society. He told the story of the Incas, which had long been repressed. Thus hoping to portray the success of mestiza culture, rather than cultural domination of the Spanish. Yet, he still wanted unification through religion via catholic. And the rest, as they say is history, for the same problems have transcended time: The exploitation by the empire. While the empire may have changed, the struggle continues. Old stereotypes prevail of the indigenous cultures, yet many truths are just coming out for the first time in an attempt to forge a better future.
