Conflict management is an area of concern for managers and nursing leaders alike for establishing a safe, effective, and team oriented work environment. It is important that nursing leaders possess a range of skills that will unite, encourage, and direct their employees to attain and maintain the goals and visions of an organization. Conflicts happen often in the workplace and generally involve disagreements between people with opposing views or conflicting personalities (Lamberton & Minor, 2014, p. 262). They also happen defining issues, with conflicting thoughts of an individual, and from the work place itself. Four sources of conflict presented by Lamberton & Minor (2014) are content, values, negotiation-of-selves and institutionalized will be discussed. Awareness of and knowing what causes conflict is important in strategizing ideas and plans to resolve them. Explanations and examples of these four sources will follow. In my brief nursing career I sometimes struggle with my confidence and leadership abilities to guide and instruct others beginning their nursing career. My unit manager sees me much differently. She views me as a proficient nurse with the ability to teach, instruct and a beneficial influence on new nurses and nursing students. This inner conflict is slowing going away bit by bit as I complete each class towards a bachelor’s in nursing. This conflict has pushed me to climb the ladder in the nursing profession and has improved the way I see and feel about myself on a personal level.
