Sovereignty

(1) Sovereignty means “supreme and independent power or authority in government as possessed or claimed by a state or community.” (Dictonary.com)

First of all, Sovereignty is vital for any country to survive. Singapore’s sovereignty is anchored by a cohesive society, economic development and our military vitality. In addition, Singapore has always placed a prime on its security and its security policy is built on the “twin pillars of deterrence and diplomacy”, a rational affair that its leaders proponent. (Eugene Lim, 2013, para. 3).

Secondly, it is a small country which makes it harder to protect its sovereignty as other countries can easily take over when war occurs, causing threats of terrorism to be high. Moreover, Singapore’s lack of natural resources which is needed for economic growth makes it difficult to survive. Therefore, Singapore needs to count on other countries to get their resources such as water, timber and food supplies etc. In addition, maintaining good relations will give Singapore an edge, as in times of dire straits, other countries can help Singapore. On the other hand, the government protects and fights for the people rights. So if an unruly government who does not care about its citizens may affect the country’s sovereignty as issues will start arising such as war, due to disagreement between the government and people.

Besides, not many Singaporeans are interested in joining the army which makes it challenging as Singapore’s defence will weaken due to lack of manpower. About one-third of the men in army are ex-soldiers. Due to the growing economy and being one of the safest countries, Singapore’s sovereignty will be threatened because many people will want to govern the country.
