Topic: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) . Radio Frequency Identification (RFID, is a automatic identification technology that uses electromagnetic or electrostatic coupling in the radio frequency to identify an object, animal or person. RFID consists of three components: a scanning antenna, a transceiver with decoder and a transponder. The antenna contained in the RFID tag transmits a signal that activates a transponder through radio frequency waves. The RFID tag or transponder transmits the data back to the antenna providing information such as product identification, location status or pricing. The transmitted data signals a programmable controller, which routes the pertinent data for appropriate action. . (1) There are two forms of RFID systems that can be utilized and they are classified as low frequency and high frequency. Low frequency operates in a 30KHz - 500KHz range and has an operating range of about six feet. High frequency operates in an 850MHz - 950MHz and 2.4GHZ – 2.5GHz range and its operating range exceeds 90 feet. Higher frequency systems tend to be more expensive than low frequency systems. (1) RFID technology employs two different types of tags, active or passive, to read, write and transmit information. Active tags have an internal battery source and are primarily read and write. Active tags produce longer read ranges than passive tags and are larger, heavier and more expensive. Since active tags are dependent on an internal battery, they have a limited life span of up to ten years. Conversely, passive tags rely on an external power source and are smaller, lighter and less expensive than active tags.
