mHealth which stands for Mobile Health, is a term used for practicing public health and medicine using mobile technologies. The health sector in the emerging markets faces many challenges like high disease prevalence, low number of health care workers and limited financial resources. Even though the remote areas of the emerging markets lack in modern technologies like internet the Mobile Technology has been an exception. Mobile Phones have managed to reach even the remote areas with people having low or middle-income. This rapid rise in mobile phone penetration has motivated the idea for combining the mobile technology and the health sector. This led to the idea of mHealth. Education and awareness Mobile phones have been used as vehicles for health promotion and prevention messages. Problem addressed: Why SMS? All mobile phones are SMS-enabled. Texting is cheaper and affordable by the people in remote areas. The Short Message Service (SMS) can offer a low-cost method of providing efficient reach out about a number of health issues. SMS messages are sent directly to users’ phones to provide health information, disease prevention and treatment methods. Example: SMS alerts for infant vaccinations in India. When the parents register the birth of a child with the hospital they will be integrated with the SMS vaccination alert system. Alerts on vaccination dates and details on their importance will be automatically sent to the mobile numbers of parents. The SMS alert program was started in 2011. This is a government driven program. It is jointly sponsored by Information Kerala Mission / Government of Kerala. This program has been huge success and is now adopted by many hospitals. Strengths of this technology: This program covers the c... ... middle of paper ... ...developed by Tata DOCOMO and partnered with Voicetap Technologies. Functionality: The service uses mobile devices to connect students who are interested in acquiring knowledge and learning with the experts in India. It provides premium education content and learning experience. The subscription rate is Rs. 2 per day which can be done via SMS. Students can view video tutorials and play MP4 videos. There are many categories provided like Education, Jobs, Hobbies, and Sports etc. Strengths: The service was able to cover the core competencies like – affordable, lightweight, mobile, simple, and human-centric. Students can access the content anywhere in their mobile and browse the contents according to the categories. Thus we can see that the potential for mobile devices are promising in the emerging markets and they can be used effectively to improve the global economy.

Are you about to go into surgery? We have an app for that! There are mobile phone applications, “apps”, available for nearly every aspect of your life, including your health. There are categories specifically dedicated to medicine in Google Play and Apple’s App Store. The apps include guides to anatomy, pharmaceuticals, and patient treatment. These apps can be downloaded by anyone, but there are apps dedicated to just professionals as well. Until recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) restricted radiologists from using mobile devices to view patient images. However, this year the FDA made the decision to approve a new radiological app that allows physicians to make diagnoses from images on a mobile device (Bolan, n.p.). This decision is just one of many that are paving the way for more apps in medicine. Health care is at a transitional point that, in 20 years, current technologies and social media, such as mobile apps and Skype, will be the standard information-sharing platforms used routinely by medical providers and caregivers.
As health care evolves new innovated ideas that have been discovered and created in order to advance in technology or in any other field. One innovated idea that has been presented recently is integrating behavioral health with health care organizations. There are many patients that suffer with behavioral health issues that do not seek the resources they need due to the stigma surrounding mental health or not having access to the services. By providing behavioral health services in primary care, patients can be provided with the appropriate care. Not only will it reduce readmission rates but also help reduce cost. A second innovated idea is mobile disease management. Currently Vheda Health has created a tool to manage and prevent disease in large populations by monitoring their patients and tending to their needs faster. The mobile interface will create a personalized actionable care plan which will include weekly video meetings with the patient and their care team. This potentially will help reduce hospitalizations and ER visits. A third innovated idea in 3D human tissue printing. Currently Biobots is working on creating 3D bioprinters that are able to build functional living tissue. This will help reduce cost of prosthetic hands for children and allow surgeons to create copies of the patients anatomy to practice procedures before the actual surgery. These great innovated ideas can ultimately help reduce cost and improve quality of life for the community. Although some
The Children’s Health Fund goal is to provide high quality pediatric healthcare services such as medical, dental and social services to underserved children in the United States. By doing so they needed to integrate a way that could service deep rural and poor areas as well as offer care to families that earn very little or no money. A major concern was that not everyone has the access to transport themselves to the medical centers so integrating a mobile medical clinic was launched and transportation was provided throughout locations in need of healthcare services that wouldn’t otherwise be able to obtain healthcare. Forty-one states had starting supporting the growth in mobile clinics and their operations offering many programs nationally. Funding for the Children’s Health Fund comes from four sources to include donations from corporations, individuals, aid from congress, and government health care such as Medicaid and insurance from the state for children.
The idea of telemedicine is not new. In fact, when we get sick we often pick up the phone and discuss our conditions and possible treatments with our health care providers through the telephone. When there is an accident we dial 911 to obtain emergency assistance. These are just a few simple examples of applications of telemedicine. With advancements in technology, the new era of telemedicine will allow the patients and doctors to actually communicate both verbally as before but also visually. Telemedicine is broadly defined as "the use of electronic information and communications technologies to provide and support health care when distance separates the participants".5 This technology has allowed people in underprivileged communities, rural areas, and geographically isolated locations to receive quality health care. However, the application of telemedicine is not limited to these regions. This tool will allow schools, hospitals, and other health care arenas to receive specialty care when needed.
The advancements with technology with in the health care industry has provided patients with other alternatives when it comes to receiving health care than merely having to seek treatment from his or her physician in an office setting. A new advancement in the health care field that will be discussed thoroughly is mobile health (mHealth). This technique allows patients to use a mobile device (cell phone or tablet) to obtain medical information, track his or her health, transmit medical information to his or her physician, and even alert them if there appears to be a medical emergency. As with all developments in health care, there are pros and cons that exist. Could mHealth be the future of health care for those who live in remote locations
Telemedicine is defined as the use of telecommunication and information technology in order to provide health care from remote locations of the country and world with various forms of modern technology communications. With the use of telemedicine the possibilities are endless and beneficial to patients in remote areas of the world. It would help patients that have trouble with transportation and allows patients to stay within their community and still be provided modern medicine. The benefits of telemedicine allows worldwide medical consultations, continual access to updated physiologic data about patients in remote areas, electronic medical records, remote examination of patients at the primary site, and consultations between the primary and secondary site. With the convenient use of telemedicine prisons are now using telemedicine to treat inmates.
mHealth Apps is a company that creates games and interactive technology that teach players how to take care of themselves when they are sick and how to avoid sickness. These applications available on phones and computers draw patient attention to keeping themselves healthy. For example cooking games that encourage healthy cooking engage patients all the while teaching them how to take care of themselves. So these apps kill two birds with one stone: they entertain and teach patients! Patient engagement technology provided by Solution Reach is revolutionary in many ways. One characteristic stands out in particular: the ability to translate doctor messages into different languages. This feature is extremely useful for foreign patients or patients who cannot speak the same language as the doctor. This feature brings patient and doctor closer in terms of communication and understanding. Understanding the core concerns of a patient can sometimes be the dictating factor of whether or not an accurate diagnosis is delivered! Certain implementations of patient engagement technology can also help improve patient health in the long run. For example, patient engagement technology that allows patients to see their treatment plan/ calendar prove to be extremely useful. These digital treatment plans are not only easy for patients to access but also easy for doctors whom now can
Changes are in the works for EMS as we know it today. Mobile Integrated Healthcare is the future of EMS and will require new management styles and operating procedures. The concept of Mobile Integrated Healthcare evolved from a vision in the EMS agenda for the future. The agenda describes EMS becoming community-based and fully integrated with the overall health care system. The agenda also described that EMS of the future would have the ability to not only provide acute illness and injury care, but also identify health risks, provide follow-up care, provide treatment of chronic conditions, and community health monitoring. Several services in recent years began undertaking the task of creating and implementing a model to accomplish these goals. MedStar in Fort Worth, Texas began an experimental program and has seen excellent results. Their program initially focused on frequent callers and grew to working with hospitals preventing readmissions and treating and monitoring chronic high risk patients in their homes.
There are countless benefits to having a cell phone. A few of these benefits are pleasure, escape, relaxation, inclusion, control, and affection (Jin 612). In the healthcare industry, cell phones are gaining popularity. They’re being used as a medium for clinical assessment and intervention, managing commuter stress, reducing examination anxiety, countering battlefield stress, enhancing emotional self-awareness and socially supportive behavior, and many other things. Cell phones are also used as a means to send out patient reminders about appointments, disease monitoring and management, and to provide the patient education (Sansone 33).
The use of smartphones are getting more attention day by day. Medical applications make smartphones useful tools in the practice of evidence-based medicine at the point of care, in addition to their use in mobile communication (Mosa, 2012). Applications allow patients to view current records, receive and send information to other healthcare providers and request medication refills. Patients enjoy smartphones as education is provided, they are able to self-manage their disease and discuss any questions with providers in a timely manner. As Wyatt mentions, “One of the greatest advantage of using healthcare applications is convience.” Although smartphones have many advantages, it also creates challenges for nurses as smartphones are always changing with more advanced
We are living in electrifying times. Mobile health (mHealth) technology is changing every facet of the way we live. Possibly no area is more imperative or more reflective than the improvements we are observing in healthcare (Fox & Duggan, 2012). In current years, there has been an increase of wearable devices, social media, smartphone apps, and telehealth, and each has immense promise for the future of organized health care (Fox & Duggan, 2012). With the capacity to assemble and interpret patient-made data, these mHealth tools keep the assurance of changing the way health care is provided, proposing patients their own customized medical guidance (Manojlovich et al., 2015). Health care availability, affordability, and quality are
Well, this move by the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) service providers is close on the heels of the 'Non-Stop Mobile' scheme launched by Tata Teleservices recently, which allows a customer to receive calls for two years without buying a recharge voucher. This scheme has turned out to be a big hit.
The cliche “Big as life” (big, very large) are what the Smartphones has become in today’s society because they occupy our lives, jobs, school, entertainment, and how we communicate. The Smartphone is one of the many technology necessity that makes it easier and quicker to connect with family and friends near and afar. Because there are many opportunities and challenges with the use of Smartphones in the healthcare field not all are beneficial. The lost will be greater than the gain of benefits when patients and healthcare workers well-being and livelihood are being compromised. Even though Smartphones have some advantages and disadvantages, but the jury is still out to whether the advantages of the Smartphone out weigh the disadvantages in healthcare and social Media. Especially, when Smartphones are being abused and misused on the job at the expense of patient privacy.
