What´s a Genetically Modified Organism

711 Words2 Pages

A genetically modified organism is an organism whose genetic material has been changed by working with genetic engineering methods. Organisms that have been genetically modified may be microorganisms like bacteria and yeast, insects, plants, fish and mammals. Because living organisms have real restrictions to protect themselves against the exposure of DNA from a un similar species, genetic engineers have to find new methods to cause the DNA from an organism into a different organism. One way of genetically modifying organisms is using viruses or bacteria to "infect" animal or plant cells with the different DNA. Another way of modifying is by putting DNA into very small metal pellets, and injecting it with a unique gun into the cells. You can also modify by Injecting the different DNA into fertilized eggs with a very pristine needle. Lastly, you can modify the organisms by using electric shocks to form holes in the membrane blocking sperm, and then forcing the different DNA into the sperm through these holes. One of the main GMO foods is corn. Corn takes up most of the United States crops. In most countries corn is known as maize. Corn is a large grain plant that is alteredby specially trained people. Corn is grown in ears. While it grows in ears it is rowed in kernels. Soy is the most intense genetically modified food in the country. The largest U.S. producer of hybrid seeds for agriculture, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, formed a genetically engineered soybean, and it was approved in 2010. It is modified to have a very raised level of oleic acid, which is already found in olive oil. Oleic acid is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid that can lower LDL cholesterol if it is used to replace other fats.

I feel that the GMO foods is just out to get money and they don’t care what happens to the people who eat it. I feel the most intense argument is whether they can put labels on their food or not because, going labelless will lose the company the most money and the money is the most important thing to the company. If the company put labels on the food the consumers wouldn’t be happy because they would realize what is in GMO foods that can harm them. If the labels were on the food the customers would definitely be buying less of that food so they will not be harmed. If GMO foods were labeled I would try my best to stay away from the unhealthy foods so it wouldn’t hurt my health.
