“It has been estimated that 69 percent of Americans age 35 to 44 have at least one missing tooth, and one in four over the age of 74 have lost ALL their natural teeth” (American Academy of Implant Dentistry, 2013).
“A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge” (American Academy of Periodontology, 2014). Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies or is resorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is not enough bone suitable for placement of the dental implants. In these situations patients are not good candidates for placement of dental implants because the bone foundation is not adequate to support the implants. Bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure. The bone is either obtained from a tissue bank or the patient’s own bone is used. Sinus bone grafts can also be performed to replace bone in the posterior upper jaw.
These procedures may be performed separately or together with implant placement, depending upon the patient’s overall condition. There are several areas of the body that are suitable for obtaining bone grafts. In the facial region, “Bone grafts can be taken from inside the mouth, in the area of the chin or third molar region. In more extensive situations, a greater quantity of bone can be attained from the hip or the outer aspect of the tibia at the knee” (Aetna, Inc., 2013).
In cases of extreme bone loss patients may need to undergo a sinus lift. The maxillary sinuses are behind cheeks and on top of the upper teeth. Sinuses are empty ai...

What{s a Dental Implant? Essay example

- ... One major determining factor is the amount of stress put on the graft after surgery. If a patient does not comply with home care, and excessive forces such as chewing and brushing take place before healing is complete; then the success rate plummets. In most cases, interdental areas have a much higher success rate due to the abundant blood supply. On the contrary success around the root of the tooth is much more difficult because of the lack of blood supply and interdental bone loss. To satisfy the curiosity of a patient, the periodontist will show the patient the surgical site right after surgery to alleviate the patients desire to look at it at home (Leblebicioglu & Aruaz-Dutari, 2008)...   [tags: artificial tooth, bonegrafts]

Implant Supported Mandibular Overdentures Essay

- Implant supported/retained mandibular overdentures have three crucial components: the implant fixtures (02 or more), the choice of attachment ( bars, studs or magnets) and the prosthesis. The Mc Gill consensus reported a minimal treatment objective, the mandibular two-implant overdenture (as opposed to a conventional denture) should be considered as a first-choice standard of care for the edentulous patient5. Mericske-Sterne also concluded that retention, stability and occlusal equilibration of the implant supported mandibular overdentures improved only slightly by increasing the number of implants.7 Implant survival rates did not vary with number of implants and ranged between 93% to 100%.8...   [tags: implant, complications, classification]

Dental Implants Criteria Essay

- INTRODUCTION Missing teeth have traditionally been replaced with dentures that rely on the residual alveolar ridge and mucosa for support and retention. Where there is inadequate oral anatomy to support the denture, surgery may be required (preprosthetic surgery). Complete denture wearers are usually able to wear an upper denture but many struggle to eat with a lower denture because of its mobility. Dental implants offer an alternative in many circumstances. [1,2] Implant dentistry has provided dentists with a variety of innovative products and techniques to restore dentitions that otherwise would have seemed beyond the ability to restore....   [tags: missing teeth, dentists, oral care]
