What is Good Writing?
Correct spelling and grammar, sentence variety, conciseness, effective paragraphing, do these words sounds familiar? Well those are a few of many other rules that we are taught since we were in school about how to write well. There is nothing wrong about these rules though, however, good writing is more than having correct spelling, grammar, sentence variety, etc. Writing has been part of our lives for centuries and centuries, when people used to write with images because words were unknown. After years of writing with images the first alphabet was created which was the Latin alphabet; since then, writing has been changing at an enormous speed. David Sapir, who is a linguist, and professor of anthropology at the University of Virginia, once told him that “Languages change, and so do the writing”. This phrase allows me to think that Dr. Sapir was right, that if languages change and writing changes, then why do we stick to the old-school writing rules? My idea is not to make people forget about spelling, grammar or the writing rules that we are taught in school, but not to stick to them. For example, one question of the survey I conducted says: Is your conception of good writing limiting in any way? The results were favorable to my research. Even though 54% disagree and strongly disagree with the statement, 46% agree and strongly agree with the statement. That is almost half of the people I surveyed, agree that their conceptions of good writing have limited them in some way when writing something.
