What it means to be an effective educator is that you are able to reach all of your learners and teach them in a way they can understand. This means planning for different kinds of learners for each lesson, and making time for small group instruction for those students who are not quite grasping the instructional content. It also means that the educator is patient and understanding. It is important, especially in early childhood, that the educator is patient because this is a whole new world to these kids, most of them are not used to being in school all day. So we have to take that into consideration, and make adjustments. Effective educators put their students needs first. I recently planned a lesson using shaving cream and a glue mix. I I am always right on time, and pace my lessons according to the schedule. I plan each activity with a decent amount of time this way if one part of the lesson goes over, those minutes can be used from another part that will not take as long. With a strict schedule in our classroom it is not wise to go over on any time, because then it will be taken from somewhere it is needed. So for my lessons, I make sure that we stay on a strict time schedule. One weakness I have would be classroom management. I often allow the students to tell a story not related to what we are learning in the middle of a lesson. I need to work on having them save it for brain break. They also like to blurt out if they need to tell me something, so I also need to work on the students raising their hands if they have something they need to say. When I teach I know the students are learning. I will often do quick informal formative checks, such as a thumb up or thumbs down if they are getting it. The majority of the students have their thumbs up. When I notice one who does not, I will ask them where they need clarification, and I can help that student right away before we get any further into instruction. I also administered a test I made and they all passed with a 100%. This was evidence that my students are learning what I am teaching. There are many factors to consider as to why a student may have failed or had to retake a class, but we believe there is one major factor that most people neglect to think about. Students are unable to understand the material due to the style professors use to teach. When students are unable to understand the material, they begin to get frustrated. Some eventually begin to give up because they think they will never be able to learn the material. So, why is it that some students can pass a class while others do not? We think that each student has their own unique learning style while each professor has their own way of teaching. Some professors teach by lectures, some use visuals, some use hands-on activities, and some use a variety of these methods. When taking these simple factors into consideration, it is easy to see why a student that learns best by viewing pictures or diagrams may struggle or become distracted easily during a lecture-based course ("Types of Learning Styles.") The education system has been changing in recent years and the same problems that existed continue to get worse as years pass. Problems that were seen as minor at first have now grown. How to change the public higher education system has been a major topic of discussion but there has still been no major action taken. We struggle to figure out how much funding is needed for higher education and where it should come from. Our people continue to suffer from an underfunded high cost system. The wealthy minority of people continue to be the only ones accounted for and it is time to change this. We need to adapt to the changes and the costs that continue to rise. What separates a good teacher from a great Teacher? “First and foremost a teacher must love working with children. No matter how well you teach, there is always room for Improvement ” (Killen,2009.p.100) .In this Essay I hope to show some of the key attributes, that I consider essential to becoming an effective early childhood teacher. Those key aspects are communication, building lasting relationships, engaging students effectively in the learning process, and encouraging and appreciating diversity in the classroom.
Developing an instructional style in the classroom is important because it gives the student an idea of how they will be in taking information. As a teacher, my instructional style will be more of a student-centered approach to learning. I will still have the authority figure, but will allow the students to play an active role in the learning process. My role is to coach and facilitate student learning, along with the overall comprehension of the material. The student’s learning will be measure by both informal and formal forms of assessment, which includes tests, group projects, journals, and class participation. My teaching style will impact my classroom management plan because it will reflect the beliefs and philosophy that I have towards education.
This being my first year of teaching I feel there are so many things that I have learned, and have helped me too become a good teacher. Yet I have so much more to learn, I still believe that students have the ability to learn and as a teacher it is my job to find ways to help them to become the best person they can be. Through being a reflective teacher, using professionalism, respecting diversity and having collaboration and community connecting this can be accomplished. Schools were established to teach students the means of survival in preparation for a global economy. Education’s major objective today is to help increase our economy and prepare our students for future jobs. However, the progress of our public school education system in the 21st century has declined over the years. Other countries have exceeded our American Education system, especially in the areas of reading and math. Poverty stricken areas and minorities are being deprived of receiving a good quality education. Instead, only the fortunate and the lucky students are able to receive a good education. Families apply for the lottery scholarship in hopes to be accepted to a charter school as the key for to receive a good quality education.
For example, I 've noticed students who arrive a few minutes early to talk to the professor about upcoming class materials, future tests or homework have a better chance at fully understanding the subject rather than just learning it once. Good students pay attention during the time they are in class and take notes on whatever the teachers are discussing that day. Giving back in the sense of volunteering or stating one 's point of view in class clearly distinguishes the average students from the golden students. If a student can find a happy medium between speaking and listening they will be able to make their point but also listen to any others view from their fellow peers that they may not have known prior. Growing up learning and speaking English has been something that was difficult for me at first but then came easy, but that was not the case for my mother. She spent her whole life speaking Spanish, so when she decided to take English learning classes it was challenging. However, she had me to help her throughout her struggle. I helped her complete her homework and assignments. We would also go to the library to check out easy level reading books to have her read to me. I would correct her English when it was wrong and do all I could to boost her confidence. In order for learning to take place in the classroom the teacher has to put in place an effective teaching and learning strategy. Being an effective teacher is not something that can be achieved instantaneously but rather something that has to be continuously developed and improved upon over time. Petty mentions how good teachers are not born but rather make themselves and that effective teaching comes from learning from your mistakes and successes. Petty, p. 516, 2009. This process involves teacher reflection and assessment of the effectiveness of different teaching strategies used in the classroom. It is only then that teachers can learn and advance themselves.
One good quality a teacher should have is, respect for the students. Each person’s ideas and opinions should be valued and not judged. They should be able to express themselves without feeling insecure. Another good quality is, having high expectations for your students. Each student should be encouraged to do their best and achieve goals that they may have never met before. Another good quality is, I believe a teacher should have is good communication skills. They should keep not only the students informed on what is going on in the class, they should definitely keep the parents informed as well. Teachers need to know how to communicate with all their students because some are at different levels than others.
Overall, I feel that the objectives of the lesson was met as the children were able to sort the animals according to two different attributes and describe how they were sorted. This was achieved by asking the children questions to gauge their understanding and by scaffolding their learning as they attempted to sort the animals both individually and in small groups.
Education has played an important role in people’s lives and receiving the best education is a right to all humans, but now in days we can see that our education system is in deep distress. This is made evident by the low rate of graduates; that’s why our education system needs to be improved. Many people think that our government is responsible for our bad education system, However, teachers are the real issue even though many teachers are saying they 're doing their best, they’re not. How do we improve our education system? For a start, we need to provide better teaching programs for teachers to improve their skills and make them earn their tenure instead of just giving it to them.
