What makes a hero? one does not need to have superhuman powers, wear a cape and slay dragons to become a hero. A true hero is someone who is not measured by the size of his strength, a true hero is measured by the strength of his or her heart. Aside from being the Queen of American media, Oprah Gail Winfrey an empathetic and philanthropist individual impacted society by giving those in poverty hope for a better future and giving to those in need throughout her career.
Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her parents are Vernita Lee, a housemaid and Vernon Winfrey, a coal miner who later became a barber. Her parents separated soon after her birth and Oprah was sent to live at her grandmother 's farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Winfrey’s religious grandmother was her role model. She taught her how to read and recite the bible by the age of three. At the age of six, Oprah was sent back to Milwaukee to live with her mother. However, she was neglected and also sexually molested living a tragic childhood (Kumar, 1).
In 1968, Winfrey moved to Nashville, Tennessee to live with her father and stepmother. Her father was strict and insisted education. Under her father’s atmosphere, Winfrey became an honors student, voted as “Most Popular” and joined her high school speech team at East Nashville High School, placing second in the nation in dramatic interpretation. At the age of sixteen, Winfrey was hired by the WVOL Radio to read news on the air. Three years later, she became the co-anchoring at the local news. Winfrey also won a full-ride scholarship to Tennessee State University based on her speaking ability. The same year, Oprah won the title of Miss Black Tennessee.

She donated over $40 million dollars through the Oprah Winfrey Foundation, which supports causes such as education and programs for women and children (Gray, paragraph 1). Winfrey’s foundations have impacted many lives and have set up various donation opportunities (Haggerty, paragraph 2).
Winfrey is a hero that has made the world a better place from starting a school for children in South Africa, to giving out charity to people in poverty. Even though she had some rough times during her childhood, she pulled through and became an empathetic and philanthropist individual. Winfrey’s influence has spread far and wide. She would give help to whoever needs it, expecting nothing back in return. Winfrey, societies role model, shows people the path to greatness and offer them to walk that path with her.
