“What makes a child gifted and talented may not always be good grades in school, but a different way of looking at the world and learning.” That’s what the senior United States Senator from Iowa Chuck Grassley once said. When students get a “F” on their exam, that does not necessary means they are stupid, or they do not know the material. It could only mean they have a different way of learning, or a different way of explaining the material which the teacher is not aware of. There are different ways of learning that students have, and there are different ways they apply their knowledge into real life. Therefore, grades are not the best way to judge the students’ standing in their classes, nor is it the best way to judge their learning process. In addition, schools need to have some sort of reliable grading system that the students could aknowledge before they start their course. On one hand, having a good grading system in schools is a great step that everyone seeks; however, sometimes having no grades in some of the classes is better for the students. Having some courses with no grades gives the students the ability to learn the material, be more interactive without worrying about the interaction, and increase their performance in challenging tasks.
When students have easier grading criteria, it increases their ability to learn the material instead of focusing on earning better grades without understanding the material. Students sometimes need grading criteria that will allow them to focus on their studying more than focusing on how they will be able to pass their classes with good grades that will not affect their GPA’s. For example, I have taken classes for my major that require the students to interact with the professor to get the most out of the class, in those classes there is always some students who are just sitting there taking notes only, and end up failing or almost failing in these classes. This will bring us back to the point that the students need to pay more attention to the interactions between the teacher and the students because that is where most of the knowledge is. In addition, such classes need to be grades free, or where its grading criteria is easier to have the students interact with the class, and not feel that what they are saying is going to fail them or have an effect on their grades. That is what our students need to be learning instead of learning only sitting in the classes and have no interaction because their grades will be affected.
