What is your view of human nature? When I contemplate human nature, I believe people know life is finite and while animals live to survive, humans live to try be remembered. People yearn to persist, this explains society’s obsession with immortality, vampires, zombies, and the longing to be reminisced. Collectively, I think many humans dread loneliness, society equates isolation with emptiness and as a substitute they engage in a surplus of consumerism to feel comfort. People relentlessly upload pictures to feel reassured by others. People desire authentic connection and due to technology and social media, I conclude that many people fail to create meaningful relationships. There is a subtle hollowness that many oppose, yet never resolve. I do not perceive everyone as being phony, but the objects used and the personalities portrayed can be synthetic. By reflecting meaning and behavior, a client can have self-actualization and cognize their own faults and conflicts. When I hear a friend paraphrase my feelings, it can elucidate how silly my thought was or how miserable and stressful my problem is. Yet the difference between my friend and the counseling practice is that my friend does not highlight my strengths and my possibilities. My friend does not help me identify my stressors and my fears of the future. Often, they join right in and complain about their worries with me. The counseling practice helps clients address their isolation and create goals to combat these feelings. I feel that the practice does not bring self-awareness of just pain, but of change. A client not only needs genuineness with the world, but within themselves. Counselors can help clients figure out how they want to live presently and not brood about the
