   What is Motivation in the workspace? According to the business dictionary motivation is “The internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to attain a goal (Dictionary, 2016).” Motivation in the work place can be achieved by means of a variety of different strategies all depending on the environment and the specific challenges an organization may be facing. Motivation is a great tool when it comes to improving performance, setting goals and redesigning the job or workspace are both strategies used to motivate employees and to improve overall production.  In 2011 Elizabeth Layman PhD, RHIA, CCS, FAHIMA, East Carolina University, published a case study titled "Job Redesign for Expanded HIM Functions." Where she focused on the constant change in the health care delivery system and how managers and directors can identify; the need for redesign, the factors to weigh, and how to approach goal setting as well as job and work redesign in the Health Information Services (HIS) Departments.

How are the principles of goal setting applied?  The principal of goal setting implies that people have conscious goals that energize them and direct their thoughts and behaviours toward a desired outcome. Goals should also be S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely)(Haughey, 2016). One way to pursue goals is by re-engineering the business system.  This entails inspiring the corporation as a whole so that all effort and views are in alignment towards success.  By restructuring the reporting lines and composition of functional units, the organization would simplify communication so that there would be a common...

...overcome and pushback toward enrichment programs in terms of budget, job ambiguity, and qualitative overload, but Layman ensures that these corporations who pursue enrichment in jobs actually can avoid all of these criticism and thrive.

            What was the impact of job enrichment on motivation and communication in the HIS Departments?  In terms of specifically motivation and communication among the organization for job enrichment, this relates to goal setting.  When morale is low or there is a problem in the workspace, inspiring others towards goals and allowing for enrichment in the process opens up communication and makes people feel like there is progress that they have a role in.  This reflects the autonomy that Layman mentions happens to HIS departments.  The communication pathways in turn open up because people feel more invested in what they helped make.
