To be a leader, one must posses leadership however, to describe leadership, much like any other human trait, it is a difficult task. For much of human history scholars and leaders have discussed what is leadership and what makes a great leader. However it is difficult to compare one leader 's accomplishments to another because every generation has their different struggles. Without comparing different leaders, to define what leadership is first you must examine who can be a leader.
Every individual strives to be a leader, and thus every individual can be a leader. However, not every person can be an effective leader. An effective leader shows leadership through multiple individual characteristics which collectively become their style of leadership. Thus a leader must be able to recognise these characteristics within themself, as well as others to be an effective leader.
To me, a leader is not defined by a single skill or trait a person has, it is much more complicated than that. It is defined by many things, whither be trained, taught or earned, this “skill” is important to know and use. Ideally, a leader must know how to appropriately control fellow team members. They are the go-to-person, the commander of the situation. They must be able to direct and advise people to operate in a manor greater than they would do so themselves. Essentially the role of a good leader is one who can make “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”(Aristotle)
Characteristics which I believe are the base of good leadership include courage, inventiveness, strength, reasoning, and balance. Courage make a person ambition and drive for a cause. Inventiveness makes them a problem solver and think creatively. Having strength keeps them on the righ...

... leaders who have a passion for what they do and want to continue working for a cause rather that a rank. “Successful corporations don’t wait for leaders to come along. They actively seek out people with leadership potential and expose them to career experiences designed to develop that potential.” (Kotter, 2001, p. 16)
The way to observe one 's leadership style and come to the conclusion that is in the form of servant leadership is to see the addition care, empathy and commitment to the people, they express. With every person being capable to be a leader, having the traits of a servant leader leads to a balanced effective work team able to spread a lasting good on the community. I see servant leadership as a very effective form of leadership to be used within the emergency medical services because it focuses on what we all strive to protect and serve, the community.
