What is Human Resource Management?
Human resource management is a wide encompassing area of business that keeps the employees of a business happy and cohesive. Human resource management is perhaps the most important type of management because it effects every employee from the top to the bottom of an organization. There are many aspects of Human resource management that begin at the interview and continue on to performance and compensation. One question that is often asked among management is, can human resource management solve all people problems? There are different ways to answer this question and depending on the way an organization looks at the problem, the answer is yes.
Human resource management as defined by Satterlee, is “the overarching administration of a Human Resources (HR) department” (Satterlee, 2013). HRM includes many different aspects of an organization. Some of the areas that are included in HRM are: “recruiting and staffing, organizational and space planning, performance management and improvement systems, organization development, employment and compliance with regulatory concerns, employee orientation, development, and training, policy development and documentation, employee relations, company-wide committee facilitation, company employee and community communication compensation and benefits administration, employee safety, welfare, wellness and health, charitable giving, employee services and counseling” (Hixson, 2011). The wide berth that is covered in HR is unparalleled in an organization.

It is imperative for management to treat all employees equally. Studies suggest that empathy is also a good quality for HR management to possess. Finally it is important for Human Resource Management to be aware of the changing workforce. This includes the differentiation in interviews, as well as hiring, and training standards. The important thing to remember is that without good education an employee will surely fail. It is the responsibility of the Human Resource Management department to educate all of the employees on workforce behavior, policies on harassment, job training, career advancement, and compensation. With a good HRM department in place an organization is destined for success.
