Analysis of I Know What You Did Last Summer
'I Know What You Did Last Summer' directed by Jim Gillespie. The film;
based on four high school graduates. A crazy night of fun turns to
fright as the fearful four knock down a passing figure. In a moment of
despair the group decide to dump the body in a near by lake. The four
then head off on their travels to collage work, when a year later is
reunited back home for summer break. The four all begin receiving
threats stating "I Know What You Did Last Summer." The roller coaster
of I Know What You Did Last Summer commences.
The film fits into the horror genre with its collection of horror
conventions from the damsel in distress scene, blood, mutilated bodies
and the essential in horror - Murder!
The opening sequence begins with a classic horror convention - dark
atmosphere. The camera shot zooms out of the sea giving a gloomy
effect, followed by the crashing of waves on the rocks. Creepy, gothic
type music is played along side the opening credits to jar the
audience's nerves. The camera moves onto show us a blurred figure on
the cliff top, suggesting the figure is there attempting to commit
suicide. There is an instant change in moods from the dark gloomy
scene along side gothic music to bright, lively fireworks releasing
all tension and suspense the audience built up amongst the opening
sequence.
Another example of a dark atmospheric scene is the four students on an
isolated beach site. The friends sit around a roaring, burning fire
with strong winds consistently blowing. A long whining music plays
subtly as the four tell scary stories. The director's main aim is to

...d the distance of the shot. For example fast camera movements are
used during a car chase scene as the killer chases Max. The camera
angels constantly change pulling the audience into the screen, with
each shot lasting literally seconds. The movements affect the
atmosphere as it re-jigs the audience's emotions and feelings leaving
them excited along side a mixture of feelings.
I think 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' pulled off as a top horror
film many other horror films are released similar to this however it
contained all horror conventions. Throughout most of the film it left
me wanting to know what was going to happen next constant tension and
anxiety flowed through my body. The music used in the film was the
perfect addition to the final touches it clicked along side the scenes
giving the perfect horror movie.

“You Was Right” by Lil Uzi Vert is fairly easy to understand lyrically. The essence of the song deals with unfaithfulness in a relationship as well as the aftermath. Lil Uzi Vert spends a large portion of the song admitting his mistakes to his presumed girlfriend in hopes of making things right between them. The song starts off with the hook, which rests upon the premise of how Lil Uzi Vert should have stayed loyal rather than taking another girl home with him. For example, he says, “You was right, I was wrong” (6) in an attempt to console his girlfriend and apologize. Following the hook, the first verse centers on Lil Uzi Vert’s riches due to his success as a rapper. He ties that in to his relationship by expressing how he wants to share his wealth with his girlfriend. At this stage in the song, Lil Uzi Vert is attempting to win his girlfriend back with his money and general success as a rapper. The hook then repeats itself to indicate that the argument between Lil Uzi Vert and his girlfriend is still continuing. The second verse signifies an escalation in their conflict, as he says, “You just locked the door, so I gotta text you” (42). His girlfriend is refusing to even listen

Raoul, The Persian, and Christine escape the room. Erik is devastated and wants to be buried with the gold ring that he gave Christine. The announcement that “Erik is dead,” is out and they burry him by the lake.

While Addie lies dying on her corn-shuck mattress, Darl convinces Jewel to take a trip with him to pick up a load of lumber. Darl knows that Jewel is Addie's favorite child. The trip for lumber is a contrivance- Darl's way of keeping Jewel from his mother's bedside when she dies. A wheel breaks on the wagon, and before Darl and Jewel can replace it, bring the wagon home, and load Addie's body onto it for the trip to Jefferson, three days have passed. By this time, heavy rains have flooded the Yoknapatawpha River and washed out all the bridges that cross it. The river is vicious, and the Bundrens' mules drown. The wagon tips over, and. Jewel, on horseback, manages to keep the wagon and its load from drifting downstream, saving his mother’s decomposing body. When the family finally makes it through the ordeal, they spend the night at the Gillespies' farm. Darl sets fire to the barn where Addie's body is stored in an effort to spare his mother. However, Jewel once again saves her coffin with a heroic act.

In her short story, “The Wrong Grave”, Link explores the question of what happens after death from the perspective of the bereaved and the deceased. In one scene, Miles, the bereaved boyfriend, leans over and kisses Bethany’s head while she is in her casket. “He bent over and kissed Bethany’s forehead, breathing in. She smelled like a new car” (Link). The author uses this humorous and off-kilter response to death to connect with her audience. The hikers never knew the two indigenous people, except for what they wore that night, what booze they drank, and what side they slept on. And those simple details were just enough to make the dead bodies Human: capable of joking, singing, fighting, and eating. So the sudden termination of these lives confused the hikers, for they weren’t sure what they should feel about the death of two strangers. The hikers stared and stared at the bodies, perhaps feeling sadness for the friends, parents, and lovers of these men, but feeling only emptiness for the men themselves. They were just two more anonymous faces, frozen in their final dreams and nothing more than dead.

Kawin remarked “horror itself resists formulation and can be difficult and unpleasant to contemplate.” This year was a phenomenal year for both horror and contemplative movies. Two prime examples: Get Out and mother!. Despite being both horror films with subliminal messaging and allegories, they had drastically different reactions and box office performances. To understand why this happened, it is imperative to analyze marketing, storyline, climate, and audience interpretation.
