11,352 miles away from Scotland, twenty backpackers, thirty young pupils, one room bursting full of questions and ambitions. This was no ordinary school, it was the local Primary School of Marupara, New Zealand. I made many educational and cultural stops as a backpacker but this was my favourite. I arrived at the school with full intentions of visiting the children, giving them a meal and leaving. I ended up going away with something unexpected, a clearer vision of what I wanted to do in the future. Thirty minutes of questions was all it took. Thirty minutes to see all the pupils faces light up with joy at their new found knowledge . Thirty minutes for me to realise this was what I wanted my future to be all about. Teaching children Maths, English and how to draw and write. My 7 month adventure in Australia and New Zealand has definitely developed my personal skills, increased by confidence and independence. Since returning from travelling I have started a receptionist job at a local accountants. Both these jobs allowed me to gain strong communicational skills. During my last year in school I became a prefect at Dingwall Academy. This gave me responsibilities in the school which I took very seriously. I also enjoyed various activities in school such as playing in the schools hockey team and going to art tutorial on a Wednesday evening. Having a part time job while studying for my highers was difficult and I struggled at first with time management. However this made me even more determined to succeed in my final year of school. I did this by putting extra study time in during my spare periods and improving my independent study skills by dedicating more study time at home.
