METHODOLOGY
The purpose of this study is to engage former SBP participants from the 2014 cohort in open conversations to understand the experiences that impacted their transition and integration to university life during their first academic year after they participated in the Summer Bridge Program.
Research Question
What experiences impacted students’ transition and integration to university life during and after participating in the Summer Bridge Program?
Objectives:
1. To engage SBP 2014 cohort participants in open conversations about their experiences during and after participating in the three weeks program.
2. To analyze and codified SBP participants’ experiences for recurrent themes.
3. To develop a theory on how these experiences impacted SBP participants’ transition and integration to university life.
Methodology
For this study, I will utilize a qualitative study design based on Glaser and Straus (1967) Grounded Theory. Qualitative research is “the umbrella concept covering several forms of inquiry that help us understand and explain the meaning of social phenomena with as little disruption of the natural setting as possible” (Merriam, 1998, p.5). Grounded theory is the systematic process of discovering theory from collected data (Glaser and Straus, 1967). Building on this concept, Schwandt (2007) suggests grounded theory refers to a research approach that formulates theoretical ideas from the collected data. Participants
For this study, I am using a probabilistic sampling strategy known as the purposeful sampling. The purposeful sampling, according to Merriam (1998), is based on the assumption that the investigator wants to discover understand, and gain insight on the phenomenon in questions and must select a sample from which the most can be learn. Thus, the sample from which I believe the most can be learned is SBP 2014 cohort. At this point, this cohort is beginning their second academic year, which the literature suggests it is a critical moment on their academic lives (Walpole, Simmerman, Mack, Mills, Scales, & Albano, 2008; Ackerman, 1991) and, according to data from the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs it is also a critical moment for SBP participants.
