What does inclusion mean to you? Over the course of the semester, I have been learning of how to incorporate students with special needs in the classroom. One of my main questions I had after completing my advanced practicum was how to incorporate children with disabilities within the classroom. My definition of inclusion is including all students within the classroom community without judgment and learning to embrace each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Inclusion brings a sense of belonging into the classroom. One of the worst feelings in the world is being left out or judged by peers. I know that judgments and bullying is never going to disappear completely but, it is easier to build a safe and supportive classroom where everyone feels apart of something. It is ultimately the responsibility of the teacher to build the safety and community within the classroom. From volunteering in my hometown, my favorite thing that I have seen is taking the first 15 minutes of the day and having that time to check in with one another. This gives the students the opportunity to build relationships with one another and establish trust. This lets students get to know one another besides academically. It is amazing what happens when you ask a child “what their favorite food is?” or “What did you do over the weekend?” they love to talk about it. The stronger the community in the classroom the stronger the relationships amongst peers. The goal for all students is to improve and become active members of the community.
