Case study #1 Instagram

“With over 150 million users on the platform, 16 billion photos shared, and 1 billion likes happening each day, the photo-sharing and editing platform is one of the most engaging channels on social media” (S. Harris, 2013). This amazing statistics have affirmed that Instagram belongs to social network giants. In 2013 the CEOs of Facebook acquired this social network. People can use Instagram for free with no monthly subscription fee. Since the Instagram is provided to users for free the management of the company had to find other way to generate profit.
By changing the terms of use Instagram has lost a big part of their users. With this change arise a big ethical issue. If a new user wants to create an Instagram account it is necessary to accept the terms of use, which are frequently ignored by everyone. A crucial issue for the users is that by accepting these terms, Instagram has right to provide your photos to the third party for profit without any compensation for the user (owner of the photo/video). These changes of terms were made without alerting the users. In a democratic state a human being has right to privacy and property. Instagram didn’t violate any laws because they mentioned it in the terms of use, but it was unethical against the users. The main issue is that people who use Instagram on daily basis do not approve that third party might use their photos for commercial purpose. As stated by Kevin Systrom, co-founder of Instagram, “Our intention in updating the terms was to communicate that we’d like to experiment with innovative advertising that feels appropriate on Instagram” (2013).
