From the Tempest play, we are introduced to the character known as Ferdinand in act 1 scene 2. We know very little about Ferdinand except that he is the heir to the throne of Naples and is of an upper class. He is the son of Alonso - the present king of Naples. Apart from this, we have very little information on this particular character at this time. In this essay I will be studying the feelings of Ferdinand towards Miranda, using two scenes extracts from the play. (Act 1 scene 2 and Act 3 scene 1.) Our first meeting with Ferdinand is when he is shipwrecked upon the island, segregated from the remaining royal entourage. His first paragraph of speech is one of confusion and distress, as he is perplexed over the sound of music drifting in from an unknown place. In the tremendous play of ‘Romeo & Juliet’, Shakespeare’s ways engages the audience straight away. The astounding methods he uses hooks the audience into the play and allows them to read on, wondering what will happen. The tragic love story of Romeo & Juliet, as mentioned in the prologue, sets a variety of themes throughout Act 1 Scene 5. Many of the recognisable themes are: youth and age, revenge, forbidden love, fate, action and hate. The main idea of the play is a feud that had been going on between two families, The ‘Montagues and Capulets’, the son of the Montagues and the daughter of the Capulets fall in love and the story tells us how tragic, death, happiness and revenge find them throughout the play.
“The Tempest” is a play written by William Shakespeare in early 1600s that has been previewed in different kinds of movies, such as the one made in 2010, directed by Julie Taymor. It is a play containing themes such as; revenge, allusion, retribution, forgiveness, power, love and hatred. When it is compared to the play, there are specific differences seen in the movie, such as; Prospero is reflected as a woman in the movie. The time differences between the play and the movie and how the spirit Ariel is shown as a white man in the movie. The play starts with the story of Prospero, the Duke of Milan. He gets banished from Italy and was cast to sea by his brother Antonio. He has perfected his skills during twelve years of exile on a lonely island. Prospero creates the tempest to make his enemies’ ship to wreck and lead them to the island. Meanwhile, Antonio takes Prospero’s place and starts to make everyone believe he is the duke and makes an agreement with the King of Naples, Alonso. Besides the drama happening in the island, Prospero forgives Alonso and the others.
Shakespeare was the absolute man of his time during the medieval ages in which he lived. Actually, his plays began to be famous far after his death, which has resulted in a lasting legacy for his writings. He has composed an incredible amount of plays that have almost all continued on to be performed. Two more commonly known plays of his are The Tempest, and Macbeth. These are two very diverse plays that have a completely separate plot, characters, and meaning. In both plays, an unfortunate event occurred. Bill Delaney states about the perspective of King Duncan, “Obviously there would have been no knocking at the gate if Macduff had slept inside the castle or if Duncan had simply asked Macbeth himself or his most kind hostess Lady Macbeth to see that he was awakened in the morning.” Like Duncan, Prospero in The Tempest, he was not expecting at all to be stranded on an island. Also, there were many people that helped throughout these situations in the two plays. In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth played a huge role in helping with the murder of King Duncan. In The Tempest, Ferdinand fell in love with Miranda and helped Prospero with all that he needed to help get on his good side. In The Tempest and Macbeth, Ferdinand and Lady Macbeth can be compared with their willingness to help someone who needed it, their intentions to help someone they loved, and they can be contrasted with the end result of their objectives.
Secondly, Miranda also serves as the ultimate fantasy for any male who (like Ferdinand) is a bachelor. She is extremely beautiful, she is intelligent, and she has never been touched (or even seen) by another male. Shakespeare makes Miranda even more desirable by including the fact that she has never seen or even talked to another man (with the obvoius exception of Prospero). Miranda personifies the ultimate source of good in the play, and provides the ultimate foil for the evil character of Caliban. When Ferdinand is forced to chop wood by Prospero, Miranda offers to do it for him. Finding a woman this humble in the world of Shakespeare is almost impossible. One does not have to look farther than her last line in the play to realize her purpose in the plot. Miranda states "O wonder! / How many goodly creatures there are here! / How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world / That has such people in't" (Tempest,5.1,185-7) Through this passage and many of her others Miranda shows a positive attitude which is almost uncanny when compared to the other characters.
The Cardinal and Ferdinand, the brothers of the Duchess, are very much against their sister’s re-marriage. Ferdinand urges her not to marry again. He condemns it because he thinks that it shows a lustful nature.
Bosola's inconsistency makes him different to some of the other characters in the play; the Cardinal is always cold and calculating, Antonio is honorable and benevolent and Ferdinand is fierce and aggressive, even in his mad state. There is no change in their characters, yet Bosola reaches beyond the confinements of the stereotypical role of `black malcontent', as Antonio describes him, altering his opinion of the Duchess as a prostitute, `this precise fellow is the Duchess' bawd', to seeing her as a noble woman and feeling compassion for her in her last moments of life, `Return fair soul from darkness, and lead mine out of this sensible hell!' Ferdinand and Miranda’s type of relationship shows Shakespeare’s ideas about true love, recognising not just the emotional side of love, but the physical nature too. Miranda promises Ferdinand “The jewel in my dower” which is her virginity, a prized thing in Jacobean times. This knowledge would have been known by Shakespeare’s audience and knowing this helps us to understand Prospero’s protection of his daughter from Caliban.
Due to an ancient grudge, the tale of the downfall of Romeo and Juliet showcases themes of love persisting through all, including death. The two portray an equal lust for each other’s love, yet approach the situation differently. This reflects the contrast between their immature or realistic actions. In the balcony scene in Act II scene ii, Romeo is shown to be impulsive and impractical, whereas Juliet is more reasonable and mature. This is revealed in their attitudes toward love, their current situation, and the language they use.
The Tempest, like any text, is a product of its context. It is constructed in relation to moral or ethical concerns of 17th century European Jacobean society. The resolution of conflict appears 'natural' or an inevitable consequence if regarded in relation to the concerns of its context. The resolution of conflict in this play incorporates Prospero being returned to his 'rightful' or natural position as Duke of Milan, his daughter Miranda getting married to Ferdinand, and the party returning to Milan leaving the island to the 'monster', Caliban. The resolution is a consequence of the concerns of the time, including the idea of the divine right of kings, courtly love, and colonisation.
William Shakespeare’s last famous play “The Tempest” illustrates the theme of betrayal throughout the play. From the opening scene, the play begins with a storm that Prospero has created in order to provoke a shipwreck that contains all the people who have betrayed him. The ship contains his brother Antonio, who stole his Dukedom of Milan and the king of Naples Alonzo, who aided him in unseating him. Prospero was banished from Milan and landed in an island in which he was forced to live there for 12 years with his daughter Miranda. Not only do we get to see Prospero’s determination on seeking revenge for the injustice done to him but along the way we also get to witness how other characters plot against each other and plan on taking power from one another.
