Stereotypes are assumptions held about the characteristics of a particular group of people. These assumptions could be due to their race, culture, country, community and religion. Women are not as smart as men. Men are strong and do all the work. Americans are tolerant but arrogant. Girls are not good at sports. Black people are stronger than white people. Black people are criminals. Old folks are all very old fashioned. All blond women are dumb. Guys are messy and unclean. Girls are only concerned about physical appearance. Women always talk too much on the phone. All Blacks are lazy. Women are bad drivers. Muslims are terrorists. These are some famous stereotypes representing some commonly held conventional beliefs about specific type of individuals or groups. Many people believe that stereotypes exist because they spring from truth often asserting, “If there is smoke, there is fire”. Although many people would argue that stereotypes are based on truth, stereotypes are not grounded in truth because they are based on false assumptions, hasty generalizations, biased media reports and lack of cultural knowledge. Stereotypes exist due to false assumptions. Judging people without knowing them, with limited knowledge, is a primary reason that contributes to making false assumptions. By stereotyping, we are actually ignoring the diversity which exists among different groups. Some common stereotypes about black people are that they are criminals, they are violent, they are ugly, they are un-educated and that they are involved in gangs. One belief, that is a stereotype, is that red-haired people are hot tempered. Another belief is that Scottish people are stingy. Such thinking ignores many even-tempered redheads and generous Scottish people. Stereotyping emphasizes many differences between groups while ignoring their similarities to other people. However, stereotypes are assumptions that are assigned to groups of people because of their religion, nationality, gender, race, clothing, among others. In our daily life, there are negative and positive stereotypes, and it is possible that we all use stereotypes, all the time, without knowing it. Also, in my life I experienced this issue because of my ethnicity and my gender.
