What Are Employers Looking For?
In my past jobs, I notice that employers are looking for almost the same kind of employee each and every time. Though there are different job positions to be filled, the characteristics or traits always end up being similar to one another because employers already have an idea of what kind of employee usually works well for organizations and if a person fits in that mold, the chances of getting hired is higher. Knowing what employers want will actually help us to get jobs faster.
The most important thing that employers want to find is employees that are easy to be taught. Fast learners are needed in any working environment because the company will also spend time, effort and resources to train a person for the job. Sometimes, this even involves being sent to seminars just so the new employee knows how to handle the job. Other employees including peers and supervisors will also be there to help train the newbie. If he or she is a slow learner, it will be a burden to the company. Instead of taking a short while to adapt to the task, more time will be spent in training and this is a waste of time and money for the company. They hire people so that they can utilize the skill of the person and not to be trained all the time. In any professional environment, it is expected that a person is highly trainable and adapts fast to changes. Processes and business flows change very fast in the globalized world. A system that has been used for a decade can be replaced by a newer and more efficient one in just a matter of days. Looking at the future jobs that I want to have, I know that these traits will be very valuable to help me land my dream career. We go to job interviews because we are interested in the job but it doesn’t mean we will sign the contract. Of course we will still look at the benefits, the job description, and other important things that people look for in a company to work for. It is the same thing for employers. They too are looking for specific things and therefore, there is no guarantee that they will see this in you and you will get hired. These traits discussed above remind us that “it 's important to know what employers want in an employee before going into an interview so candidates can sell how they would be an asset to the company” (Zupek). Package yourself and sell yourself as an asset and it will be easier to land that dream job.
