Wellness Programs: Survival of the fittest
Employee’s health can have a major impact on a company’s success. Every year, companies pay high costs for employee’s health care and workers compensation. As these costs are steadily increasing with time, it is imperative that businesses find a way to reduce these costs. By adding on-site company fitness centers businesses can work to fights these expenses. Company fitness centers have advantages, and struggles to consider before implementing them at your business.
Advantages of Wellness Programs
In addition to saving healthcare expenditures, wellness programs can also strengthen employee bonds, increase standards of health, encourage people to stop smoking, make healthy eating choices, increase productivity, and reduce stress. By adding an on-site fitness center companies would have all of these incentives to consider.
Surveys show that employers who take approaches to wellness and disease keep yearly medical cost increases to around 5%, compared to those that do little at 10%(O’ Rouke). When these savings are realized in la large corporations a lot of money can be saved. Many companies look at building a fitness center as an investment. By putting money into building a center, it yields a larger savings. The return on investment from wellness programs that result in savings was 3 to 1(Kertesz, 1).
Major corporation Johnson and Johnson found that there headquarters fitness program had 40% lower hospitalization costs and 18% lower absenteeism than other worksites without on-site fitness programs (Busbin, 2). And since 1995, Johnson and Johnson’s number of employees with high blood pressure has declined by more than half(Berry, 105).

Doing this can make participation in the companies wellness program more tempting. By making healthy choices we can work towards fighting Americas top two health problems, smoking and obesity (Fleming, 1). By adding healthy eating choices in vending machines employees can have the option to eat well (Henderson, 1). By adding the option to eat healthy some people can work to make a healthier lifestyle change for themselves.
Wellness programs with fitness centers should be considered for any business that has rising healthcare costs. By reducing the amount of healthcare payouts, workers compensation, absenteeism, sick-time, turnover and increase worker productivity, and health of employees they can experience a great payoff.
