“How many welders does it take to change a light bulb? None. Welders are not afraid of the dark” (“Welder Jokes”). Welders spend the majority of their time looking at their world though a very small, very dark lense. It is through this lense that a welder is able to do his job and create products that keep our world moving forward. Without welders our world as we know it would fall apart. Welders experience stress, hard work, and long hours of the day steadily working to keep our world from changing. As one prepares for a future in the field of welding, one must consider the history, the educational requirements, the duties and responsibilities, the benefits, and the potential for advancement of a welder.

While in high school one can choose to take courses such as; mathematics, blueprint reading, mechanical drawing, applied physics, and shop”( “Welders,” Careers 177). The shop class in high school would help a lot because that class will teach a person the basic welding techniques that anyone going to the career of welding should know. Most jobs in welding require one to earn a high school diploma or an equivalent and is required for admission in the welding programs( “Welders,” Careers 177). There are other options in the educational process of welding, some beginners choose to pick up on-the-job training to learn more about how the welding process works ( “Welders.” Careers 177). After a welder goes through the school or on the job training one is now able to go out and and find a good welding job that will pay the money one is looking for. Many may think that on the job training or welding school is pointless but in reality, all the education one gains in classes or with hands on training can be extremely helpful when finding a

The most important duty is the reading of blueprints for the project the welders are building. If a welder does not know how to read a blueprint, he could be welding next to a gas pipe which could cause serious injuries or death and could mess up the project. For example, if a welder is welding in a new building and did not read the blueprints and hit a gas line that building would be ruined and not able to save if the sparks hit and blew the building up (“Welders ,Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers,” Bureau). Welders also need to have good eyesight to inspect the welds that have been welded so that the object is welded perfectly with no holes or weak spots (“Welders ,Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers.” Bureau). Last but not least maintaining the equipment and machinery, keeping the equipment and machinery in the perfect condition is a good responsibility to have because if the equipment is not kept in good conditions it might not work as good as it used to if it is in bad shape (“Welders ,Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers.” Bureau). The final duty happens to be one of the most important for a welder and the duty is how to ignite the torch and turn on the welder. If a welder did not know how to do this correctly it could severely mess everything up at the job site including the equipment that the welder is trying to use
