Weight training is physical activity that involves gaining mass and muscle strength. It is a great way to keep in shape and stay healthy, which is extremely important. In today’s society, there are large amounts of people who do not engage in any type of physical activity and this is a big cause of obesity and other health-related problems. Weight lifting is an excellent form of exercise and by doing this individuals gain benefits such as, lower medical expenses, increased cardiovascular function and increased bone strength.
There is a correlation between obesity and medical expenses. A study from Cornell University states that “obesity now accounts for almost 21 percent of U.S. health care costs -- more than twice the previous estimates” (1). This study reported that an obese person receives medical expenses that are about $3,000 higher than if they were of healthy weight, which is a significant difference (Cornell 1). Obesity puts individuals at risk for a number of health related issues such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, osteoarthritis, breathing problems and many more. All of these risks associated with obesity are what is causing the increased medical expenses for obese individuals. These medical conditions need to be treated, which include receiving medications and surgery and these costs add up very quickly (Cornell 1). By weight lifting and staying physically fit, individuals avoid these complications and have significantly lower medical expenses. The Cornell University research is using new methods and is trying to provide a strong case to the government so interventions can be implemented to prevent obesity (Cornell 1).

It has been proven that weight training is highly beneficial to our bodies and our medical expenses. Individuals need to understand that not taking part in physical activity takes a toll on the body. When health problems come along, medical expenses increase significant amounts and many individuals can not afford to pay them. These health problems, such as stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, osteoarthritis and osteopenia are the risks of inactivity and in today’s society they are much more prevalent. By performing weight training exercises, these risks are reduced and individuals can lead healthier lives.
Evidence of lifting weights can be traced back to the origins of man. As far back as cave painting and scrolls, there exists evidence of weightlifting. Initially as an expression of strength, to competition and functional training, weightlifting has carved its path through the ages. It has taken on a new role in the modern world; athletic training. With an entirely new emphasis in sports on speed, strength, and flexibility; weightlifting is more popular than ever. Unfortunately, young athletes often do more harm than good by injuring themselves lifting. When these uneducated lifters try to jump right into a program, lifting more than they should, an injury is imminent. What is overlooked, is that when weightlifting is done correctly, it has a great potential to prevent injuries instead of cause them. Understanding how the body works, using proper technique on the appropriate lifts, and participating in regular physical activity can greatly reduce the risk of athletic injuries.
Strength training, one of the most important parts of exercise, is usually overlooked. People don’t understand that something as simple as jumping jacks is considered strength training. Most of the populations everywhere don’t understand the health benefits of it either. Some may try for a few days or weeks and expect drastic changes, but change doesn’t just happen so quickly. You can’t go to a cow and expect a cheeseburger. Change doesn’t occur that fast. Most people look to strength training for losing weight or even to gain muscle mass. These are the reasons why I starting strength training, but I later found out about all the other health benefits that came along with it.

The costs increase to billions of dollars which puts a huge strain on not only the economy but healthcare also. Obesity is a big problem in America and everyone either knows someone who is overweight or they’re overweight themselves. Treatment for obesity is having an active lifestyle, weight loss medication, or weight loss surgery.
Firstly, it is highly effective for prevention and treatment of many common diseases and longevity. Strength training can improve muscle strength and endurance, make it easier to do daily activities, slow disease that related declines in muscle strength, and provide stability to joints. Stability exercises may help reduce the risk of falls. Such as heart disease. Mayo Clinic Staff said a routine of regular cardio can improve heart health. Recent studies have shown that break training is often tolerated well in people with heart disease, and it can produce significant benefits, (2015). It also allows the system of organs within the body to work better, especially the organ systems associated with the breathing and heart. According to an article in the journal "Circulation" wrote by Patrick Dale, (2014). When everyone begins to exercise, blood is shunted to muscles from other areas of body, including their gut. One hundred and forty-seven billion dollars. This is the estimated cost of obesity in the United States (CDC, 2013). Today, obesity is on trend to being one of the biggest public health challenges since tobacco (Perry & Creamer, 2013). In 2010 33.7% of US adults and 17% of children aged 2-19 were considered obese (CDC, 2013). While obesity is rising at an exponential rate, there is disconnect between how society views and defines obesity and the actual medical costs and future health risks the disease holds (ACSM, 2010). This is where medical professionals need to bridge the gap of medical and social construction.
