Weight-Loss and the Weight of the Media
The media bombards us with advertisements and articles about weight-loss supplements. We cannot turn on the television or radio without seeing or hearing an advertisement for Dexatrim, and we cannot flip through a magazine without seeing an advertisement or article about Metabolife. The manner in which different media sources treat weight-loss supplements greatly influences the public's perception of these products. This essay will examine a Newsweek article entitled "Mad about Metabolife," an advertisement for Hydroxycut from Mademoiselle, and a radio advertisement for Carbolife Gold to illustrate the manner in which the media presents the use of dietary supplements to promote weight loss.
Would you rather exercise for an hour and a half five days a week and not see any signs of weight loss, or take a pill once a day and begin to see dramatic weight loss in the first week? If you are like most people who want to lose weight, you want to lose the weight as quickly and easily as possible, and therefore would choose the latter. Advertisers and columnists are aware of people's desires to lose weight quickly, and indeed, all three media sources examined begin their advertisement or article by describing how weight-loss supplements promote fast and easy weight loss. In large, bold letters at the top of the advertisement for Hydroxycut is a quotation that says, "Losing 31 pounds was so easy with Hydroxycut!" (MuscleTech, 2001, p. 175). Then, in slightly smaller letters, the testimonial continues with, "I never dreamed I'd be able to lose 31 pounds so easily, but Hydroxycut made it happen" (MuscleTech, 2001, p. 175). Similarly, the radio advertisement for Carbolife Gold begi...

...her hand, is selling knowledge about weight-loss supplements. The article provides the public with the information about weight-loss supplements that the advertisers attempt to withhold. In effect, the advertisements and the magazine article are trying to sell the public opposing information, and in this sense the advertisements and the article are two sides of the same coin. However, the greater preponderance of advertisements for weight-loss supplements as compared to media sources that address the risks of such supplements weights the coin in favor of the supplement manufactures, and such uneven odds may be dangerous to consumers.

Recently, another weight loss supplement has stepped into the ever-increasing market. This drug, called Stimulife 750, is a supposedly all-natural herbal supplement that promotes weight loss without any effort from the client. Both the parent company – Stimulife International – and various distributors of Stimulife 750 make bold blanket statements such as “Stimulife 750 has everything good and nothing bad,” which set the success of the pill far higher than is possible. Furthermore, these individuals attempting to sell the product use a variety of marketing techniques to encourage purchasing the supplement; however, they provide no scientific evidence to support the claims they make regarding the safety and effectiveness of the product. By appealing to the clients’ desire for a natural and easy way to lose weight, providing pseudo-scientific statements to convey a sense of authenticity to the product, and befriending the client by seeming to care for their best interests, the distributers attempt to woo more clients. However, Stimulife 750 contains many ingredients included in other “unsafe” weight loss supplements and scientific research shows no clear evidence that Stimulife 750 is any more effective or safe as other diet pills.
He experienced life as a rancher which allowed him to relate to the working class citizens of America. He always kept the working classes best interest in mind and was fair to everyone. He was a war hero. He put his foot down and spoke out against political corruption. When it came to foreign and domestic affairs Teddy Roosevelt spoke softly but carried a big stick. He was prepared to use force when necessary but often used persuasion to avoid conflict and keep tranquility in the world. He didn’t let Congress push him around like how he threatened Congress to pass the Meat Inspection and Pure Food and Drug acts. He showed strength and interest in the future by dismantling monopolies, building the Panama Canal, and by preserving land. Teddy Roosevelt kept the average working class American’s best interest in mind and through his toughness he gave America a square
In Maus the Germans dislike the Jews and with this discrimination and mistreatment, it caused Vladek and his family many hardships by trying to survive, “It was many, many such stories-synagogues burned, Jews beaten with no reason, whole towns pushing out all Jews-Each story worse than the other” (Speigalman) this quote explains how the Germans just didn’t like the Jew and that’s why they were being beaten and their businesses were being taken away. There are people in this world that don’t like a certain race, and think that their race is better than others; like the Nazis in Maus who were German, didn’t like the Jew so they killed and mistreated them. In the story by Spiegalman Jews were sent to concentration camps that the Nazis built to slowly torture and kill them. Controlled by Adolf Hitler, the Nazis took away the businesses of Jews and their own personal belongings; Spiegalman writes, “Has the family been taking good care of my Bielsko textile factory? Don’t you know?..All the Jewish businesses have been taken over by the Aryan Managers” (Speigalman 76) this quote explains how the Germans were taking over the Jewish people’s businesses and there was nothing that they can do about
Then again, he doesn 't pick up joy from murdering the grandma and her gang. Truth be told, after The Misfit executes the grandma he gets to be enthusiastic and seems to lament what he 's finished. This response puts The Misfit in a sort of center ground; he carries on with the life of a fickle, detestable individual, however he is unsatisfied with this life. More interesting still, as The Misfit executes guiltless individuals and denies God he speaks finally about the significance of discipline and equity. He gets no joy from his criminal acts and he supposes they ought to be rebuffed, yet despite everything he perpetrates
New York City, being a natural port, has drawn to its shore waves of immigration throughout its existence. Largely in part to growing ethnic populations, utilizing ethnic solidarity as a platform to mobilize a political system has been common. This tactic was most prevalent during the late nineteenth century and later on during the 1960s in the form of machine politics. Machine politics as a system relied heavily upon voter loyalty through the distribution of petty material goods and services or patronage (Merton 101). This political system has often been rendered as faulty and a direct cause of two financial crises in New York City history. During the prevalence of machine politics, “to many middle and upper-class Americans, the cities seemed
Is obesity really a serious health concern or is the “epidemic” merely a result of highly fabricated, misleading ideas of politicians and the media? The article, Obesity: An Overblown Epidemic? By W. Wayt Gibbs featured in the May 23, 2005 edition of Scientific America, raises this question. Most health experts and average people believe that obesity is one of the most prevalent health concerns today, resulting in increased risk for other major health issues; such as; heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer, and the chance for early loss of life. However, other researchers are suggesting that the consequences of being overweight are being blown out of proportion. Naturally, they do acknowledge that obesity rates are increasing and being overweight can play a role in other health conditions.
The media has had an increasingly destructive effect on young people who are becoming worryingly obsessed with their body image. The media is saturated in sexual imagery in which young people have to face every day. The sheer volume of sexual imagery in the media today has resulted in the vast majority of young people to become hooked on looking as near to perfection everyday by using the latest products and buying the latest fashions. This used to be enough but lately the next step to achieving perfection is cosmetic surgery. Everyone wants to look attractive, especially teenagers who are not only put under massive strain to succeed but to look beautiful and climb the ranks of the social ladder, and it seems that the only way to achieve the much desired beauty is to turn to drastic measures.
Founded by Walter Gropius in 1919, the Bauhaus was a German art school that initiated the combination of art and crafts innovatively to produce goods for everyday use, which influenced and shaped modern life. The Bauhaus value is still effective today since we can still see the impact of the Bauhaus. For example, contemporary furniture are mostly minimalist, which is one of the values from the Bauhaus. This essay will discuss the failure of the Bauhaus in achieving its mass-produce ideal through examining three Bauhaus production, the Wassily Chair, the chess set and Model No. MT49 tea infuser. Through the aspects of artistry and utility, the Bauhaus pursued to generate reasonably priced mass-production by taking the forms and materials into
I want you to become aware of what we have done and take action to stop people to be happy, to respect their way of thinking, acting, and living. My purpose in writing this paper is to present my points of view on how society has changed as the years go by. Also how homosexuals have fought for many years and all the different struggles they have managed to get the rights they deserve and one day had which were then taken away because they became themselves and also because of the ignorance of some people.
The Bauhaus was one of the most influential modernist art schools of the 20th century, not to say the most influential one. Their main concern was to teach, and to understand art 's relationship to society and technology. The school was founded by the German Architect: Walter Gropius. Consequently, The Bauhaus of Design had a huge impact in Europe which is the central continent of art and the United States even after it has been closed, and has forever shape the development of Art history from now on. According to the art story website, the Bauhaus of Design was shaped by the 19th and early 20th centuries trends such as Arts and Crafts movement, which had sought to level the distinction between fine and applied arts, and to reunite creativity and manufacturing. Which later on has had affected some major artwork such as architecture and graphic design and as a result, had also inspire the romantic medievalism of the school 's early years, in which it pictured itself as a kind of medieval crafts guild. But in the mid-1920s the medievalism gave way to a stress on uniting art and industrial design, and it was this which ultimately proved to be its most original and important achievement (Art Story). The school is also known for its faculty, which included some of the most talented artists such as : Wassily
In 1919, something radical changed the way both design and craft was to be thought forevermore. The Bauhaus was a school of design, which was founded by a Werkbund member known as Walter Gropius. Gropius was thirty-six when he conceived the idea for the Bauhaus, after watching fellow Werkbund member, Henry Van de Velde, establish an arts and crafts school in Weimar, Germany. In 1919 Gropius became head of the arts and crafts school that Henry Van de Velde founded. Gropius proceeded to reorganize the school and then renamed it to be known as the Bauhaus.
According to recent statistics, every year Americans spend about $50 billion on products and services promoted to help them lose weight. However, many of these diets offer little success or success for a short time, resulting in many gaining the weight back a short time afterwards. Fad diets are “a trendy practice that has widespread appeal among a population. After a period, however, people lose interest in the practice, and it becomes no longer fashionable. People often lose weight while following fad diets, but usually regain much of
Every day people are becoming more and more concerned with their health and their appearance. Thanks to scientific research there are many remedies to improve the human body. As far as weight loss there is exercise, diets, pills, and different surgical procedures. Diet pills have become a very popular supplement to assist in weight loss, but with diet pills come many questions; are they safe, do they really work, and mainly if they are a good product or not. In order to know whether or not something a quality product, is to know how it works. The ingredients are very important and unfortunately not every diet pill has the same ingredients. Combining these effects into one pill with the correct usage creates positive results.
German architect Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in 1919 (Whiteford, 1993). While serving as an officer in the Great War, he dreamed of creating an art and design school that would help change the world. After the war, Gropius began to work on his dream and was asked to find an art school and to write his ideas in a manifesto published in 1919, the Proclamation of the Bauhaus (Whiteford, 1993). The revolutionary tone of the Proclamation of the Bauhaus inspired the soviet revolution and the German mutinies, which helped end the war.
Gropius wanted the overall goal of the Bauhaus was to design and create products with an “artistic merit” but because of Weimar’s lack of raw materials because this was in the war a lot of places didn’t have the resources or materials available to them. So these products would have to be made elsewhere. This bought in the philosophy of every student in the school should be trained to work like this.
