The Addiction of Love
Both beauty and madness is portrayed in love. The Weeknd’s album; Beauty Behind The Madness, is known to be the way he expresses his sanity behind his vision. He compares and contrasts how “beauty” represents the great side of love and the “madness” contradicts the idea of beauty. This comparison expresses how love can drive humans’ insane. The Weeknd also known as Abel Tesfaye, has built a whole career around the relationship between drugs and love. His song “Can’t Feel My Face” demonstrates how an abnormal addiction to love, naturally alters the way humans behave and think. Abel uses his powerful tone and lyrics incorporating personification, metaphors and repetition to showcase how the dependency of drugs is as dangerous

Love can do great things for humans, but when they obsess over the idea of love it tends to blindly lead them to a dark side of their life. This feeling of love slowly develops into an addiction that the mind requires, therefore the addiction begins to exploit humanity’s weaknesses. Abel personifies his addiction through the use of a woman he is deeply in love with. He interprets the unpleasant side of love when he informs his listeners that “she'll always get the best of me. / The worst is yet to come” (Tesfaye 3,4). The Weeknd utilizes his heartfelt lyrics to convey how his addiction to love tends to take him over, causing him to disconnect from reality. He admits to himself that he feels the best when he gives into his addiction, and avoids the harsh reality of his life. This “love" is altering his feelings towards life, causing him to believe “she’ll be the death of me” (Tesfaye 1). Here the Weeknd states; the drugs will eventually be the death of him, leading the listeners to believe that at some point in the song he will overdose on his “love”. The title of the song shines surprisingly clear, though it creates a feeling of being unpleasant and obnoxious for the listeners. The man in this song either feels rejected or disappointed at the world as it seems to be so cruel and also beautiful. Obviously, the world itself always has an equal balance of good and bad and you can never have both. Even though the man got his girl but he feels they are falling apart.
The scientific definition of love is "having stimulation that one desires" (5). Recent research by two British neurologists concludes that love is linked to certain brain activities. By conducting tests using a magnetic resonance imager, the scientists measured brain activity in 17 people while they were viewing a picture of their loved one, and while they were viewing a photo of a friend of the same sex as their lover. When the individuals see the picture of the person they love, clear activity occurs in four regions of the brain that were not active when the image of the friend was present. The media insula, which is responsible for instinctual feelings, and the anterior cingulate, which acts in response to euphoria-inducing drugs, such as cocaine, are the two areas of the cortex stimulated by pictures of a lover. The striatum, that is activated when we are rewarded and the prefrontal cortex also increase their activity when shown the same picture.
Naturally when a song explores themes like these it seems explore depressing and dark themes, this is seen through the tone throughout the song. The first example of tone in the song is in the lines “The Smell , The Taste it’s all just fake, the truth is what I lack’ (19-20), these lines show that the writer is feeling like the whole account of addiction and the situation that he is in feel almost fake because of how surreal it all feels. The second example of tone is that found right before one of sets that portray imagery, “But it’s all so fake” (34) these line prove as a warning for the listener of the lies of the passage that follows, again showing that the writer is omitting his addiction as some that is fake and cannot not be real. A third and final example of tone in the Classic Crime’s God and Drugs is in the line “of the things I need to face” (52) this line tells the listener that the writer has the sense that he needs to face his problems and cannot escape them on a daily basis; this shows that the song has a regretful, self-apologetic tone and describes that the writer of the song feels almost like that his addiction is something that he has to face and cannot turn around from his old ways. Madness is a disease. It’s a disease that can exponentially consume the host and make them lose their minds overnight. Allen Ginsberg, a famous beat poet, was a victim to madness. Under his circumstances, it was a disease that was incurable. Ginsberg, along with the other famous beat poets of his time in the 1950s’, had a remedy to his madness which was what he did best, create poems. In his famous poem, Howl, he vividly and emotionally paints a picture of a horrifying time in his life in which he was consumed and destroyed by madness. In HOWL, it is clear that the three parts of Ginsberg’s poem echoes the theme of madness with the use of form, tone, and language which in turn shows us of how our society really is

Many people have different perspectives when it comes to the topic of love. The word love has been tossed around by everybody and not very many people really understand the true meaning of love. There are some exceptions, but I think this is especially true for teenagers and young adults. I might be one of those people who do not fully understand the topic of love, but I hope to better understand the topic of love and its true meaning is this course.

The act of forgiveness, the infatuation with someone, the communication between two people. What is love? A friendship that turned into a lifelong commitment, that special someone who has vowed to spend the rest of their lives to honor and protect, to love each other “till death do you part.” When in love nothing else in the world matters. According to the online Encarta Dictionary love is the passionate feeling of romantic and sexual desire and longing for somebody. Poets and philosophers may never know what love really is, and we may never truly understand the question what is love.
Love happens when you least expect it. It can happen on the street corner, at the bar, at the grocery store, the park. That’s one of the greatest things about love. As for me I found love in the pouring down rain in the middle of the street. I fell in love with a man who I never thought in a million years I’d fall for. A man who is loving, caring and respectful. The night I laid my eyes on him I knew he was it. He came into my life at a point when I was unraveling and losing control. I was lost for two years after my high school sweetheart and I broke up, I thought I was never going to find real love, but I did. He saved me and I remember every minute from that night.
