Many of today’s companies manipulate data to provide their customers with proper services. These companies utilize data to tailor and promote their ads to satisfy customers’ needs. However, to fluently do so, these companies need to collect, store and process customers’ historical data. Netflix, for example, is a giant data manipulator that collects customers’ data to fluently promote their products. Netflix uses web analytics tools to collect customers’ browsing data and preferences. Without utilizing web analytics, Netflix will not be able to succeed.
Web Analytics
Web analytics is the process of collecting, manipulating, processing and analyzing website data (Burby et al, 2007). Thus, companies will be able to figure out how customers are interacting and reacting with their website. This collectable data helps companies directing their ads, enhancing their performance and amending website content to enrich customers’ appetites (Jain, 2015). Web analytics enables companies to enrich customers’ experiences by identifying their needs and probing website marketing weakness points. From a business perspective, utilizing web analytics aids companies earning profits and increasing their return on investment (Matous, 2015). In spite of the importance of web analytics, it will not stand alone to help the company if it is not supported by the company’s own metrics and measurements, these metrics and measurements should ultimately comply with company’s business goals and strategic plans. Page views and page views per visit is an example of popular metrics and measurements that utilized to examine website attractiveness (Burby et al, 2007). Moreover, some robots aimed to collect emails for spam purpose, and eventually these robots will ignore any instructions appear in robot.txt. Further, robot.txt of any website is publicly visible. Thus, anyone can have a look into it (robotstxt.org). As a result, some websites prevent search robot from entering their website or store and retrieve specific data by instructions in their website robot.txt.
