Wealth has an Influence on Happiness By Gustavo Ramirez Dec. 03, 2017 Opinion In today’s world, you look around and see people that are happy, and others that are not. The people that are happy usually come from a family that is financially stable. People like these have reasons to be joyful. They do not have so many issues; stress and pressure, to deal with. The people that are not happy are usually low-income people. These people have tougher times because they have so many issues in their hands. Wealth helps significantly when it comes to the topic of happiness. Wealth positively influences people’s happiness overall. Wealthy people do not suffer as much as low-income people. An example of this would be suffering. People who have suffered usually had some traumatic experience. This can be anywhere from losing a loved one to being in poverty. Journalist David Brook said in his article “What Suffering Does” that “Recovering from suffering is not like recovering from a disease. Many people don’t come out healed; they come out different.” These people see life differently. They do not think the same as they used to. Now, how does this relate to wealth and happiness? Well, a lot of suffering in the world comes from limited wealth or low-income. A lot of a persons’ happiness depends on their wealth. For instance, wealthy people never have to worry about eating or providing for their family, which is something low-income families worry about. There are times that wealth and happiness do not coincide, but that can be chalked up to other issues, separate from wealth. They can in fact happen and wealth is a positive influence on happiness. For one, look at it from a low-income person’s perspective. Stress and anxiety will always be something to worry about for them; however, for the wealthy, that won’t always be the case. The wealthy do not have pressure on them for worrying if they have enough money to buy groceries or pay rent. Add to the fact that being wealthy can also grant a feeling of success. In conclusion, the wealthy have a feeling that their life has both emotional and monetary value, which builds confidence. The wealthy may always feel better about themselves and be happier than others, and I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. The reason why is because some have earned their position.
