Although water sports are among the favorite recreational activities of Smallville residents, this certainly does not imply that swimming, boating and fishing are the only aquatic activities that residents are solely and predominantly interested in, or for that matter, that water sports alone are the chief recreational activities of the residents. This assumption could possibly be made because of the word ‘among’. For all we know, other outdoor activities like ball games and sports or track sports for example could also be among the list of favorite recreational sports. In the absence of quantitative statistics, there is no way to ascertain the actual number of residents who prefer water sports as their chief recreational activities. In the absence of clear numerical data, it is unfair to assume that water sports are the main recreational activities of a majority, let alone, of all residents of Smallville. Although surveys were used to determine recreational activity preferences of Smallville residents, there is a possibility that the methodological quality of the survey must have been poor. Perhaps, the sample surveyed might not have been a true representative of the entire city population or perhaps, the sample surveyed might have included only those citizens with the physical and economical means of accessing water sports. If the surveys did not include those individuals with a physical disability which precludes participation in water sports or those who are illiterate or mentally disabled and do not understand the questions posed in the survey, the sample surveyed would not be a true representative of the entire City population. Just because the river is cleaned, there might not consequently be an increase in the number of residents visiting the river for recreational purposes, and if this indeed turns out to be the case, the additional money that the city government decides to spend on devoting towards recreational facilities would be a sheer waste. The city government has certainly no way to determine if indeed there will be a surge in the number of residents visiting the river before the commencement of the cleaning, and to entirely base their decision of devoting more money towards recreational facilities is unsubstantiated and unwarranted.

The positive aspects of ‘Lake’ Powell are few yet noteworthy. Glen Canyon Dam’s hydroelectric power-plant generates one thousand three hundred mega watts of electricity at full operation. That is enough power to supply three hundred fifty thousand homes. Glen Canyon Dam holds twenty seven million acre feet of water, which is equivalent to twice the Colorado River’s annual flow (Living Rivers: What about the hydroelectric loss?). One of the most valuable reasons for the dam to remain active is that “Lake Powell generates four hundred fifty five million dollars per year in tourist revenue, without this cash inflow, gas-and-motel towns . . . would undoubtedly wilt, and surrounding counties and states would lose a substantial tax base” (Farmer 185). These positive aspects are of no surprise considering they are the reason dams are built in the first place.
What we have seen in late January has proved that the city of Phoenix needs one more water treatment facility. The tax revenue that will be lost if a water crisis every happen again will pay for the building of the new facility. The water department has known of this problem for years but has chosen not to rectify the hazard. City officials chalked up the high levels of sediment in the water to Mother Nature, but they acknowledge that a series of decisions by water officials could have worsened the problem. (Villa, Fehr-Snyder, 1) The water department knew and Frank Fairbanks knew that maintenance was required on rotating bases, on each facility and chooses to take two offline during the “winter” or “rainy months”.
Within a community is a sense of unity, which for many is brought together by the young athletes of the community. In his article “High School Sports Have Turned Into Big Business,” Mark Koba of CNBC highlights that within the last thirty to forty years high school football has escalated into a highly revered tradition in which not only communities, but highly successful corporations have begun to dedicate millions of dollars towards (Koba n. pg.). This highlights the status of sports within the community and may explain part of the reason schools would favor sports over other programs. Because sports programs can often turn over big profits for schools, they tend to dedicate most of their excess funds towards sports, and rely on sports programs to create large profits for the school. When school administrators see how much sports unite, excite, and benefit the school, they develop a respect for sports and consider it a necessity to provide a good sports program for their students and community. In Colonial America during the times of settling in to the new lands and building a society, the children and adults had fun while working and doing chores. The Great Transformation From A Casino City To a Resort Destination Atlantic City is the place to gamble on the East Coast. Although this may initially seem to be a positive characteristic, it is evident that this destination has the capability to be so much more than it already is. This point of interest has the world’s first boardwalk, which opened in 1881, has 4 miles of hotels, amusements, and casinos. Atlantic City was originally a resort town, until 1978, when it changed into a gaming city. This popular day-trip destination had over 34 million visitors in 1998 alone. Despite this amazing statistic, along with the revenue that gambling brings in, many steps are being taken in order to further promote the expansion of this great city. The renovations and improvements being made to the Atlantic City Convention Center are already increasing the amount of money coming in. There is a great deal of other things to focus on in the Atlantic City region. In endorsing local attractions in this scenic area, and in shifting the target market of this spot, this city would change back into a resort destination. When most people think of Atlantic City, the first thing that comes to mind is the casino attractions that are available. With the city’s constant shuffle and excitement, gamblers from all over go there dreaming of a big win. Many people consider Atlantic City to be the “Las Vegas of the East Coast”. There are over 12 casinos, with one building as magnificent as the next. At any given second of the day, these hopefuls may have their lives changed in an instant with just one win. These casino hotels gain most of their income from gamblers. Casinos employ almost 49,000 people every year. This number should actually jump when the Marina District opens. Although Atlantic City prospers as a gambler’s paradise, many would love to show others just how much more Atlantic City really has to offer its tourists. The Atlantic City Convention Center, built in 1929, was renovated with $72 million in 1997. With the world’s largest pipe organ, everyone from the Beatles to Pavarotti has played there. It was designated a historic landmark in 1987. Conventions, trade shows, meetings, and public events of the greater Atlantic City area all take place here. When the renovation is finally completed, it will seat up to 12,000 people for special events.
An article published by the Journal of Rural Health established that 40% of adults living in rural areas are obese compared to the 33% of adults living in urban areas due to the design and formation of urban and suburban areas. Many features of suburban development, such as the lack of street connectivity and the lack of sidewalks are associated with decreased physical activity. An assistant professor of preventive medicine and public health of the University of Kansas Medical Center, Christie Befort, states that "Access is often about travel time in a rural area, but it can also be that there's no place to go -- literal physical isolation.” The lack of community parks results in a drastic difference of physical activity between suburban and urban residents. All community recreational centers are resources for physical activity while also being publicly provided. Urban areas contain more parks than suburban areas, though most are unused. In 2005, a total of 6,545 park visitors were observed and results show that rural parks had more frequent visits, though they were less active. The differences suggest that findings from park and physical activity studies in urban areas should not be considered representative of their rural
A prevalent but highly economical constraint that has plagued inner city communities is a lack of financial income. Studies have identified “costs of registration, equipment and travel expenses”, as key determents of the lack of participation within recreational activities by lower and single income families (Hughes et al, 1992). Though many programs are offered for free, programs which require fees discourage youth in lower income families from participating (Torrance, 1998). Many Inner cities do not offer recreational programs for its residents within the community, forcing the residents to seek recreational activates elsewhere. This results in additional investments in both time and transportation cost, as many low income families cannot afford a car (Hughes et al, 1992). This causes a strain on single parent families with more than one child, as they struggle to find programs which are suitable for various ages in different locations (Hughes et al, 1992). Another socioeconomic constraint which has heavily impacted recreational activities throughout inner city communities, is a lack of facilities and space for community centers. Abstract: Society is affected every day by many different kinds of sports. These sports often govern society's way of life. People all over the nation turn their TVs to sporting events, such as golf, during the weekends. Scott Stossel states that "more than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on the weekends." Parents use sports as a teaching tool for their children. Kids learn teamwork and discipline from team sports programs and sports have also helped many students with their grades. Kids who want to compete in school sports are taught to keep their grades up or they won't be able to play, but the greedy coaches and schools often look around grades to keep their "star athletes" in the games. Adults have been affected by sports in their bank accounts. Tax increases for funding a new stadium, golf course and even school programs have hurt the middle class Americans. The purpose of therapeutic recreation is to enable all individuals to achieve quality of life and optimal health through meaningful experiences in recreation and leisure. In this paper the definition of therapeutic recreation will be discussed as well as what should be included in the definition and what should be rejected. This definition will mainly focus on health and use the Health Promotion Model to further explain my choice to focus on health and well-being. I will also be discussing the importance of inclusion in therapeutic recreation for different learning styles in many environments, and the significance of diversity in the community and what we hope to achieve by being fully inclusive.
