Malibu Boat’s, which is located in Loudon, Tennessee, has been a manufacturer in recreational towboats, since 1982. Six friends, who all loved and practically lived for waterskiing, decided they wanted to start building their own ski boats in a small shop in Merced, California. Robert Alkema started up the new organization and chose the company’s name, “Malibu Boats”. At his age he was still young enough where he thought there were no obstacles that could get in his way and didn't think his plan could ever fail him. During the first year of operation, Malibu only built two boats per week using a single-hull design on each boat. Under Alkema’s management the company, each employee was entitled to their own opinion on what should or should not go on Malibu’s boats. Due to that he let them prove their point on their thoughts and each employee at the time got to basically design their own boat at the time and then they would vote if it was good enough to put on the production line to be made. At that point in time there were still only about ten people working for the company. By 1984, Malibu had repaid its initial loan on the company and was starting to build over 400 boats a year. Alkema had the company making a profit in just over two years. Since Malibu was completely debt free, the company was able to work outside the original limitations of the boat building industry.
