"Environmental factors are more significant in explaining water scarcity than human factors." Discuss.
Water is one of the most vital resources to a human that there is. 70% of the Earth is covered by water but only 3% of that is fresh and able to be consumed. When it is taken into account that roughly two thirds of that fresh water is trapped in ice at Antarctica it shows how little water we actually have. According to research, some 1.1 billion people worldwide lack access to water and a further 2.7 billion find water to be scarce for at least one month per year. Clean drinking water is threatened and there are billions of people across the world who need access to it to survive. Yet not everyone has the ability to access clean drinking water and those who can take it for granted and waste it. Wasting water is a human factor that contributes towards water scarcity but they don’t show the whole picture as many environmental factors effect water scarcity as well. Many problems to do with water scarcity have nothing to do with human actions or interferences but are natural things that are hard to deal with. One of those things is drought. A drought occurs when an area is not getting enough rainfall to be able to sustain the life that is residing there. Some areas are in perpetual drought where as others only have to deal with droughts on the odd occasion. Droughts are very common throughout the world and there is very little that can be done to prevent such things from happening. Another environmental factor is distance. There are many areas throughout the world which have to deal with water scarcity because the just are not close enough to anywhere that can provide them with water. This mainly included places that are considered to be deserts and other areas which are extremely secluded and many not have some way that people can get water effectively and
