The assessment phase is one of the first elements of effective water resources management. Assessment refers to a focused or comprehensive overview of key conditions and trends representing a baseline status. A baseline is a “snapshot” of environmental and other relevant conditions at a point in time which will serve as a point of reference for management strategy priorities, and for future changes in the watershed/basin. Watershed/basin data collected prior to the implementation of proposed pollution controls and other management activities can be used to establish a baseline for determining the success of the overall watershed management plan, and to adjust the plan as time passes.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Land use/Land cover
Land use/Land cover (Fig.1) classified data on a scale of 1:50,000 published under Bhuvan Thematic Services of National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC), ISRO was used for this study. Land use/land cover mapping on a scale of 1:50,000 for the entire country has been taken up by NRSC, ISRO with an objective of generating digital land use/land cover database using 3-seasons (Kharif, Rabi and Zaid seasons) terrain corrected Resourcesat-2 LISS-III (Linear Image Self Scanning-III) data. According to the technical document of the data, the overall classification accuracy of the data was found to vary from 79% to 97% based on assessment and generation of Kappa co-efficient.
