Aims of experiment
Conduct one experiment to determine the water potential of a potato tissue. Conduct another experiment to determine the osmotic potential of an onion cell.
Water in plants
Water plays a critical role in plants as it makes up 85% to 95% of the plants’ weight and 5% to 10% of the seeds’ weight which makes it the most abundant complex in plant cells(1995). Water is also involved in organic compounds synthesis, support the plant(95). Reactions occur in water, and solvents move in the water(95).
Transpiration stream is the flow of water in the plant(2010). Xylem and phloem are spatially and functionally associated together to move water throughout the plant site they practically penetrated every part of the plant(2013).
An object contains potential energy because of its position. The potential energy possessed by water is called water potential(Ψ)(13). Water always moves from one place of high water potential to another one of low water potential(13). Under the standard condition, pure water’s water potential is 0(2008). Simple molecule including water move across the plasma membrane by diffusing freely(13). A steep concentration gradient is required for efficient diffusion(13). The process of water moving across the selectively permeable membrane is called osmosis(13). The water’s osmosis movement is a place of high water concentration to a place of low water concentration(2013). The osmosis potential(Ψ s or ψπ) of a solute is proportional to the dissolved solute’s concentration(08) and is always negative in solutions(14). Plant cell uptake water through accumulating dissolved molecules e.g. salt、sugar and amino acid(2009). Unlike the animal cells, every plant cell has a cell wall which can prevent it from bursting. With the help of strong cell wall, the plant cell can draw in enough water by amassing enough dissolved substances. Therefore plant can remove the water from the soil then transpire it into the atmosphere(2009). That is the reason why the plant can prevent the flood.
High salinity soil is one of the major problems facing agriculture when there is too much salt gathered in the soil, plants’ water taking ability decreases as they are in the “physiological drought” situation. Plant cells need to have more dissolved substance than the soil to absorb water from soil(2009). That is why salt stops plant growth and can eventually lead to death.
