"Water, water, everywhere, Nor any drop to drink” written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is often an accurate saying when it comes to water. This saying is not accurate just because All over the world people struggle to find clean water to drink. Without access to clean water they suffer from illnesses and diseases from drinking and using dirty water. Water pollution is the primary cause of many health and environmental problems. Eliminating water pollution would prevent many dangerous diseases and illnesses. Eliminating water pollution would also result in animals and their environments not being harmed. In Flint, Michigan, a crisis came into existence after people learned the water they were drinking had been contaminated by the lead pipes that had carried it. A toxic algae bloom in the water of Lake Erie resulted in Toledo, Ohio shutting down their water supply to citizens. The toxic algae bloom killed animals and the plants within it. Water pollution is a major problem, but what causes it? Why exactly is it a problem? What can be done to fix it?


Water pollution is a growing environmental concern. However, to understand the problem one must know what water pollution is. Water pollution is the build up of substances to an extent that is damaging. As Chris Woodford states, "water pollution is all about quantities" meaning if there is more of a pollutant added to a source of water, it will cause more of a problem than what a small amount would (4).Water pollution can be categorized into two main types. These types are point-source pollution and non-point source pollution. Each of the types of water pollution are classified by different factors. Point-source water pollution is recognized as a pollution coming "from a single source...

Water pollution may be an environmental problem now but with the education of people, laws, and preventive measures the pollution can be reduced.


Water pollution is the contamination of water by sources such as nutrient runoff, oil runoff and urban runoff. All water pollution effects the environment, killing animals and plants, and potentially harming humans. These problems could be solved through simple solutions such as educating people about water pollution and enforcing laws to prevent it. Water pollution has been an environmental problem for a very long time and will continue to be unless positive change happens.
