The problems with waste management today are that too many people are throwing things away and not recycling them. 55% of recyclables end up in landfills each year. 33% ends up getting recycled, and 12% ends up in incinerators.
To reduce the amount of waste in the city, the people will follow the 4 R’s of waste management. The 4 R’s of waste management are reduction, reuse, recycling, and rethinking. To remove the large amount of waste, the people will reduce the amount of trash they have. The first “R” is Reduction. Reduction is very important because it decreases the amount of energy used to . These will benefit Apalis in a variety of ways ranging from economical gains to the health of the citizens and environment. They will help reduce the amount of pollution created by the city, minimize the cost of the waste disposal and promote a healthy and safe lifestyle for the community. Recycling costs have the potential to be high due to the technology needed for proper disposal, a way to combat this cost is to have it be shared equally amongst the residents by employing a flat tax. Pollution itself will be reduced by common sources of trash being remade in the recycling plants to be used in a productive way. Research shows that landfills and factory waste can create cancer causing risks which is why Apalis will locate its solid waste management sites far away from the communities.
