A duo of Vast Broken Worlds Human Nature in Feed and Wall-E
Human nature is an interesting aspect of humanity and the way people live, behave and react. Human nature is something each individual possesses giving them unique traits as well as common ones. By comparing M.T. Anderson’s FEED and Disney’s “Wall-E” there will be a better understanding of human nature and what it prevails in terms of Destruction, Romance, and Trends. The future of humanity is said to lead to the world's end making humanity itself leaders of destruction. By comparing the novel and film a clear understanding will be made of just how destructive humans can be.

People in this world are so dependent on their FEED “a device that was a revolution” that they don't notice the decaying world around them. The society killed off most of the resources in their world. They even managed to pollute the moon as quoted on page four ...Craters all being full of old broken shit, like domes nobody’s using anymore and wrappers and claws pg 4. Most of the animals were genetically modified like cows that were modified to be plants that grow beef. By comparing FEED to “Wall-E” we can really see just how much they have in common. There is the romance between Wall-E and Eve as well as John and Mary. Wall-E and Eve meet after Eve is sent to earth to look for any remaining plant life, not much later Wall-E saves Eve from a colossal wind storm, Wall-E then proceeds to show Eve his collection of human items.Wall-E shows Eve the plant he found and she takes it and manually shuts down sending a signal to her ship to come and retrieve her so she can finish her mission. During the time of her shut down and the ship retrieving her Wall-E takes her on a romantic journey that Wall-E will never forget. In the case of John and Mary they meet after Mary bumps into him and shuts his phone off this then turns into a romance scene were the two are in the pool and are splashing each other. Love, itself, is a simple word, but no word can compare to its power. Love can lead people to their extremes and some people to their downfalls. In Feed by M.T Anderson, the story shadows two lovesick teenagers and their dreadful ending. The story commences as Titus and his friends go to the moon for spring break, where they meet Violet. Shortly after a day on the moon, Titus and his friends, including Violet, are hacked by the Coalition. After they depart back home from the hospital, Violet has a secret; a secret that it will change Titus and Violet’s life forever. Violet’s feed is malfunctioning; she is dying. All this information and Violet’s overload of her memories, bucket list made Titus part from her. In the end, Titus reunites with Violet as she dies. Titus then deliberates, “Everything Must Go” (Anderson 299). In Pixar’s Wall-E, the story set in a robotized and catastrophic earth, surveys a love story between Wall-E and Eva. Although the movie is without words, none are needed to see the love between Wall-E and Eve. Chasing Eva relentlessly, Wall-E embarks on the AXIOM. After the discovery of the plant, the captain of the AXIOM is mesmerized by the beauty of the earth. Inspired, the Captain faces a couple of battles against technology but maneuvers the ship back to earth. Even though the earth is lifeless and adulterated, they begin to nurture it with plants. WALL-E begins by showing Earth as a dystopian, apocalyptic wasteland almost entirely devoid of life. Remnants of civilization hint at Earth’s previous habitation, which ended following an apparent total environmental collapse. Shots of dust and garbage are indicative of the anthropogenic nature of this collapse (Andrew Stanton). This presents background information without the need for expository narration.

In viewing 12 Angry Men, we see face to face exactly what man really is capable of being. We see different views, different opinions of men such as altruism, egoism, good and evil. It is no doubt that human beings possess either one or any of these characteristics, which make them unique. It is safe to say that our actions, beliefs, and choices separate us from animals and non-livings. The 20th century English philosopher, Martin Hollis, once said, “Free will – the ability to make decisions about how to act – is what distinguishes people from non-human animals and machines 1”. He went to describe human beings as “self conscious, rational, creative. We can fall in love, write sonnets or plan for tomorrow. We are capable of faith, hope and charity, and for that matter, of envy, hated and malice. We know truth from error, right from wrong 2.” Human nature by definition is “Characteristics or qualities that make human beings different from anything else”. With this said, the topic of human nature has been around for a very long time, it is a complex subject with no right or wrong answer. An American rabbi, Samuel Umen, gave examples of contradictions of human nature in his book, Images of Man. “He is compassionate, generous, loving and forgiving, but also cruel, vengeful, selfish and vindictive 3”. Existentialism by definition is, “The belief that existence comes before essence, that is, that who you are is only determined by you yourself, and not merely an accident of birth”. A French philosopher, Jean-Paul Sartre, is the most famous and influential 20th - century existentialist. He summed up human nature as “existence precedes essence”. In his book, Existentialism and Human Emotions, he explained what he meant by this. “It means that, first of all, man exists, turns up, appears on the scene, and, only afterwards, defines himself. If man, as the existentialist conceives him, is indefinable, it is because at first he is nothing. Only afterward will be something, and he himself will have made what he will be 4”. After watching 12 Angry Men, the prominent view on human nature that is best portrayed in the movie is that people are free to be whatever they want because as Sartre said, “people create themselves every moment of everyday according to the choices they make 5”.
Both movies, Feed and Wall-E are similar to our world today and also the future. First, these stories have a way of showing us what our future may be like. Also, the problems our world has now and problems we may face in the future. And last, this book and movie show how our world is controlled and how things work. They are both critical in our current world problems because they worry about the same problems we do in real life and may have to worry about for our future world.
The movie is set about 700 years into the Earth’s future. The Earth was shown to be completely contaminated so that no more plant and animal could survive, and the last of the surviving human population were safely taken into the spaceship Axiom, where they were originally planned to live for 5 years until Earth becomes habitable again. WALL-Es, which are cleaning robots were tasked to perform the clean-up operation. However, the clean-up operation was unsuccessful and the supposed five-year cruise turned into a seven centuries in space, and only a single WALL-E was left. Still, WALL-E continued to perform his tasks, building structures from garbage. One day, he found a healthy plant, placed in the shoe filled with soil, and took it to his trailer. The biggest blight on the face of the planet is mankind. The major problems facing the world today can all be traced in one way or another back to the interference of man. The human race has yielded too much power for the past several thousands of years and it is time for a stern, quick change in the world. Mankind has walked with impunity from place to place upon the face of this planet and only in a few instances has it rendered anything other than death or chaos. My purpose with this essay is to illustrate that the human race is almost not worth running. Creatures endowed with such inborn capabilities have sunken to a level below any seen before. While capable of such acts of beauty and wonder, they instead choose to act selfishly and without reason.
