In the first act a character that goes by the name Claire Zachanassian, is introduced to the poverty stricken town of Gullen. She is described as a very grotesque woman who is literally pieced together due to various events she has encountered in her unconventional life. Mrs.Zachanassian has come back to the town of Gullen to seek vengeance on the man who led to an unspeakable fate of prostitution and hardships in her early life. Claire turns the citizens of Gullen moral compass upside down in the matter of a few words based of actions that led to her unjust fate many years prior to her return. However the only character that seems to question the actions of Claire Zachanassian is the teacher of Gullen. This character is the only one that seems to look into the underlying messages and hints that Mrs.Zachanssian leaves behind during her visit. ... the outcome of the crime she intends on occurring in the near future .The only reason Claire and the whole town is in their predicament is because of the fact that the law system was corrupt, this shows how the town has not progressed in that area and may be foreshadowing to the future of Gullen if they show no progress in trying to change their ways.
Concluding this point it would be safe to say that the corruption of Gullen is not only in their towns’ economic state but in their morality. The town is suffering due to an unjust decision made many years prior which haunts them in all aspects of everyday life and leads to an impending betrayal of another citizen. Over the events of this play unjust decisions occur in a domino effect sequence leading to the answer of the question, can justice be bought?, which in the case of this play is yes, when the price is right.
