Also, the correlation between violence and crack was high, which caused the government to place harsher penalties onto crack than on cocaine. The sentencing ratio was 100: 1, so for every 5 grams of crack, you needed five hundred grams of cocaine to receive the same minimum sentencing. There was no chemical difference between the two drugs; the only difference was who used them. George Gerbner and Larry Gross created the theory to determine if media shaped the attitudes and ways of thinking in individuals. Television is by far the most widely used form of media and being that it is available to all members of society, it has a big influence. The news in particular pre-conditions society to believe that all African Americans are innately criminals, while Caucasians are the victim. Even when there is direct evidence that links a Caucasian to a crime, the incident is down played because of their label as a “victim”.
Furthermore, movies and television shows tend to highlight African Americans as inferior by placing them in low-wage jobs with little skill involved. Also, rarely do you see upper, middle-class African Americans families portrayed, unless they gained their money through criminal activities such as selling drugs. It is important to understand that knowledge of crimes, in particular, the black community, come from the media and from personal learning. When taking into account the Cultivation Theory, individuals must possess knowledge outside of the media presence in order to fully understand what is going on in society. While the news is a credible source, social media and television shows are not factually accurate and the distinction between these forms of media has to be made in order to understand actual crime
