There are numerous of articles being published today linking children who consume violent media to obesity, aggressiveness, and sociopathic behavior. The question posed today is: Could there be a possibility that children will have some benefits consuming violent media? Gerard Jones, author of the article “Violent Media is Good for Kids”, advocates for children to be presented with the opportunity to indulge in violent media. Jones states that violent media helps children immerse themselves into feeling complex emotions such as anger and courage, and that it is healthy for their brain development. He emphasizes the importance of how violent media is beneficial to children because if they have access to it, it will allow them to control the emotions of rage and express it in a positive manner when they are exposed to it. ...rs of violent media like me. Children should watch it in moderation because it is of utmost importance for them to be able to express emotions like anger in a safe manner.
Gerard Jones article was well written and he states some very good arguments that are hard to disagree with. However, due to the fact that I have a huge personal background relating to this article, I could point out that it was flawed in some aspect because he failed to consider the consequences of too much violent media for children, and does not offer a solution such as why the parents need to play a role for the child using violent media to help express and manage emotions such as anger. Therefore, while violent media does benefit children emotionally, it will be not helpful to them if they do are not exposed to it in moderation and parents are not there to help teach them the values of it.
