Biography of Vincent Van Gogh – Starry Night (1889)
Vincent Van Gogh an extraordinary artist was born in Holland, March 30, 1853 and died at a young age of 37 years old on July 29, 1890. He received his education in boarding school, then went to middle school without completing. Gogh did not further his education after dropping out. He showed no talent in art in his early childhood. However, his relative took him under his wing to work as an assistant. He was trained as an apprentice at his job. Meanwhile, Vincent picked up the ability in creative writing, mostly to his family (Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam).

He took lessons and practiced until he mastered his artistic ability and surrounded himself around other artist to gain knowledge of the skill. He traveled where he could enjoy the beauty of the landscapes away from city life to capture the beauty and serenity which inspired him to create his artwork. Gogh’s biggest fan was his brother. Financially, Theo took care of the starving artist who no longer could not afford to. Van Gogh wrote several letters and his family and friend before painting Starry Night. To his friend Emile Bernard, Vincent Van Gogh writes: I won’t hide from you that I don’t dislike the country, as I have been brought us there – I am still charmed by the magic of hosts of memories of the past, of a longing for the infinite, of which the sower, the sheaf are the symbols – just as much as before. But when shall I paint my starry sky, that picture which preoccupies me continuously? (Lauren Soth 301) He usually likes to paint visionary, however Van Gogh relied on recollections of the events that happened previously in his life. By the same token, the church portrays an important time in his life when he preached. Lauren Soth argues, “Starry Night is a religious picture, a sublimation of impulses that, since Van Gogh’s loss of faith in the Church, could not find their outlet in conventional Christian imagery” (301). Starry Night is versions from his past life where Vincent geared away from ministry and became mentally challenged. Vincent created Starry Night during the time he spent in the mental institution. According to Van Gogh: The Starry Night, “In 1889, van Gogh entered a hospital to be treated for the mental, illness he battled throughout his life; it was there that he created his most famous painting” (28). It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Born in 1853, he was one of the biggest artistic influences of the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh created a new era of art, he learned to use art to escape his mental illness, and he still continues to inspire artists over 100 years later.
Coming from a family greatly involved in art dealing, Vincent van Gogh was destined to have a place in the world of art. Van Gogh’s unique techniques and use of color, which clashed and differed greatly from the masters of the art world of his time, would eventually gain him the recognition as one of the founders of modern art. Van Gogh’s early life was heavily influenced by the role of his father who was a pastor and chose to follow in his footsteps. Although he abandoned the desire to become a pastor, van Gogh remained a spiritual being and was strong in faith. Plagued with a troubled mind and poor health, van Gogh’s life became filled with torment and isolation that would influence his career in later life as an artist. In his late twenties, van Gogh had decided that it was God’s divine plan for him to become a painter. His works would express through thoughtful composition and vibrant color, the emotions that he was unable to manifest in the real world. Van Gogh’s perception of reality and his technique would face harsh criticism and never receive full acceptance from his peers as a serious artist during his brief career. In a collection of correspondence entitled The Letters of a Post-Impressionist, Vincent confirmed these thoughts while writing to his brother Theo, “It irritates me to hear people say that I have no "technique." It is just possible that there is no trace of it, because I hold myself aloof from all painters” (27). His technique would later be marveled and revered by the art world. The piece of art work that I have selected is called Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. The lines observed in this picture are implied lines. The colors used in this picture are blue, yellow, grey, a pinch of hazel ,and a brownish black.There was also may water colors used in this picture. The picture shows a variation of swirls and circles. In the background , you can see that there are many wave-like mountains. This makes the picture more eye catching. Overlapping is used in this picture to bring out the different shapes . Such as , the triangles, circles and the crescent like shapes. This picture has many meanings to it. I hope to learn more about it in the future.

Thanks to the help of his older brother Theo, Van Gogh was able to put all of his emotions and mental worries into productive use, creating masterpieces that are sold today for millions of dollars (“Vincent Willem”). Although he is hugely successful today, Van Gogh had little to no fame in his lifetime and he struggled immensely with his mental state of mind for many years. Ultimately his mental illness (some believe there were more than one) lead to his untimely death, but his turbulent state of mind also helped him to create magnificent images that are revered as some of the greatest pieces of art of today.

With Theo van Gogh’s association, Vincent met reputable Impressionist painters such as Émile Henri Bernard and Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin. Impressionism served as a platform for Vincent in developing his own style . He explored with colours, a stark contrast from his usual dark and sombre style. The influence of Japonisme charmed Vincent into residing in Arles where he began painting landscapes. Thereafter, Vincent voluntarily checked into Saint-Rémy sanatorium where his works reflected strong colours and lights of the countryside around him. His manic depression and epileptic condition, led to his suicide on July 27th 1890.

Starry Night is an artwork that was painted in 1889 in an asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Provience, France while the Midnight in Paris poster is digitally made somewhere in the USA by someone in that company sometime in 2010. While both these artworks are very different, they have some similarities.
