The Getty Center is a museum that not only holds a beautiful land of greenery and flowers, but also contains a wide range collection of artworks dating from the earliest to latest periods. At the time of my arrival at the exhibition, the weather was gloomy and humid which kept me from being outside most of the trip, but because I was indoors I was able to take my time to look through some of the galleries. Each artwork was put into designated buildings that matched up to the era they were made in and style of work. There were numbers of illustrations, sculptures, and paintings created by talented artists; however, none of the pieces greatly grabbed my attention. After roaming continuously through the structures of the museum I finally found a work of art that drew my eyes to it. Located in the Western Pavilion, the artwork that I found most compelling and aesthetically pleasing is Vincent Van Gogh’s Irises (1889) placed in between Edgar Degas’s painting of The Milliners (1882) and Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Portrait of Albert Cahen d’ Anvers (1881). The gallery setting where these art pieces are situated in has dark brown walls and wooden floorboards, and right above is a white-colored ceiling with lights positioned to illuminate every artwork in the room. Because of the dusky-colored walls, Van Gogh’s painting of Irises was accentuated and was also highlighted by the light pointing towards it. The art piece is an oil on canvas encased in a golden tarnished frame, which further enhanced the theme of the composition. The placement of Van Gogh’s painting suited perfectly with the surrounding artworks since they all fall into the impressionistic and post-impressionistic style. Despite the few connections of the pieces stated, such as how both artworks are impacted by the Post-Impressionist movement and that color and abstract forms were predominantly used in their compositions, the number of dissimilarities outweighs how much they share in common. Van Gogh took part in finding a method of expressing personal feelings through his art. While Cezanne focused on his structural development in art through the use of color. There are as more to the list of the contrast 5 between the two artworks, but it is important to acknowledge the artists’ exploration of new artistic style that withdrew all naturalism used by the Impressionists and how they introduced symbolism and the expression of one’s own personality in art at a deeper level.

Spending time looking at art is a way of trying to get into an artists’ mind and understand what he is trying to tell you through his work. The feeling is rewarding in two distinctive ways; one notices the differences in the style of painting and the common features that dominate the art world. Many might have been working on Good Friday, but many others were enjoying The Frist Museum of Visual Arts. A museum visitor visited this exhibit on April 14, 2017 early in the morning. The time that was spent at the art museum was approximately two hours and a half. The first impression that one received was that this place was a place of peace and also a place to expand the viewer’s imagination to understand what artists were expressing to the viewers. The viewer was very interested in all the art that was seen ,but there is so much one can absorb. The lighting in the museum was very low and some of the lighting was by direction LED lights. Before Impressionism came to be a major movement (around 1870-1800s), Neoclassical and Romanticism were still making their impacts. Remembering last week’s lesson, we know that both those styles were different in the fact that one was based on emotion, while the other was practical and serious. However, one thing they both shared was the fact that the artists were trying to get a message across; mostly having to do with the effects of the French Revolution, and/or being ordered to do so. With Impressionism, there is a clear difference from its predecessors.
In this paper, we will focus on examining Vincent’s painting, Starry Night. The paper will begin with a short introduction about Vincent where an analysis will be conducted to explore more into the painting. Subsequently, the paper will move on to explain how Starry Night impacted the wider histories of art and the period where it was created. Lastly, The paper will further examine two accounts or interpretations of Starry Night from art historians.

Imagine you can own one of the famous painting in the world. Which one would it be? What will you do with it? If I got to own a famous painting, I would hang it in my bedroom and I’ll show it to my family. In this situation, If needed to narrow it down it will be The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali or Nighthawks by Edward Hopper. These paintings are extremely different, and their artistic movement is opposite from one another. By the end of this essay, you’re going to know the differences and similarities of these paintings.
This painting by Vincent Van Gogh is on display at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum, in the Impressionism exhibit. There are many things going on in this painting that catch the viewer’s eye. The first is the piece’s vibrant colors, light blues and browns, bright greens, and more. The brush strokes that are very visible and can easily be identified as very thick some might even say bold. The furniture, the objects, and the setting are easy to identify and are proportioned to each other. There is so much to see in this piece to attempt to explain in only a few simple sentences.
This marked the beginning of his inspiration to form a personal, expressive, and religious stance on his art values and style. He has found his process and content that will be apparent in his future work.
Jackson Pollack and Vincent van Gogh are some of most famous artist before and after their time. Each artist has a similar and different painting methods that they use when painting pictures. There most well-known paintings are called “Number 1” and “The Starry Night”. The paintings give off emotion by how they look, but each one is painted in different ways. The public did not find their paintings wanting when they were made. The difference was how long it took for them to get recognized for their work. Lastly, the paintings gave different and similar reactions to people that have changed over the years of their existence.
In this essay, I shall try to examine how great a role colour played in the evolution of Impressionism. Impressionism in itself can be seen as a linkage in a long chain of procedures, which led the art to the point it is today. In order to do so, colour in Impressionism needs to be placed within an art-historical context for us to see more clearly the role it has played in the evolution of modern painting. In the late eighteenth century, for example, ancient Greek and Roman examples provided the classical sources in art. At the same time, there was a revolt against the formalism of Neo-Classicism. The accepted style was characterised by appeal to reason and intellect, with a demand for a well-disciplined order and restraint in the work. The decisive Romantic movement emphasized the individual’s right in self-expression, in which imagination and emotion were given free reign and stressed colour rather than line; colour can be seen as the expression for emotion, whereas line is the expression of rationality. Their style was painterly rather than linear; colour offered a freedom that line denied. Among the Romanticists who had a strong influence on Impressionism were Joseph Mallord William Turner and Eugéne Delacroix. In Turner’s works, colour took precedence over the realistic portrayal of form; Delacroix led the way for the Impressionists to use unmixed hues. The transition between Romanticism and Impressionism was provided by a small group of artists who lived and worked at the village of Barbizon. Their naturalistic style was based entirely on their observation and painting of nature in the open air. In their natural landscape subjects, they paid careful attention to the colourful expression of light and atmosphere. For them, colour was as important as composition, and this visual approach, with its appeal to emotion, gradually displaced the more studied and forma, with its appeal to reason.
In this essay, I will contrast and compare the two art movements, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism. I will be concentrating on the works of the two leading artists of these styles Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh.
When I saw Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring about five years ago at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., I felt something about the painting that I had never felt before when looking at artwork. I felt as if this girl, this young woman in the painting was real, hiding in the museum behind this canvas. She was in the flesh. Her skin was still dewy from three hundred-something years ago, the light across her face still glowing. She was in the round, her eyes followed mine, she was real. She was about to speak, she was in a moment of thought, she was in reflection. This girl was not crimson red or titanium white, she was flesh. Vermeer caught her, a butterfly in his hand. She was not just recorded on canvas, she was created on canvas. She was caught in a moment of stillness. Vermeer creates moments in his paintings. When viewing them, we step into a private, intimate setting, a story. Always, everything is quiet and calm. I realize now it is no wonder I had such a strong reaction to Vermeer the first time I saw him: he is a stillness seeker.
Impressionism happened during the nineteenth century particularly in France although there is also impressionist movement in other places although the number of artists involved does not match the number of artists involved in impressionism in France. The characteristics of impressionism include the use of short brush strokes (Perry, 1995) and the lack of effort to veil or hide or keep these brushstrokes from being noticeable as the audience looks at the painting. There is also a renewed attention and focus on the effect of light, particularly the natural ambient light which is why many Impressionist painters work outside the studio, the paintings featuring a subject that is often found outside or outdoors, from Claude Monet’s Woman with a Parasol to Alfred Sisley’s Bridge at Villeneuve-la-Garenne. Still although different in many ways they still share many similar aspects such as the use of large canvases, an “all over approach” in which the whole canvas is treated equally, every part of the canvas is important, quality of brushstrokes and textures, the use of accidents that play an important role to the entire work and the attempt to express pure emotion directly onto a canvas.
